Yellowcard is a pop punk/alternative rock band based in Los Angeles, California. After forming in Jacksonville, Florida in 1997, the band has been in California since 2000. Best known for their songs "Ocean Avenue," "Light Up The Sky" and "Way Away," Yellowcard's latest album, "Southern Air," was released in August of 2012.
The band formed in 1997 after meeting at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Florida. They released four albums by 2002 but had created very little impact on the music world. Then Yellowcard signed with Capitol Records. Late in 2002, the band began recording their major-label debut, "Ocean Avenue." Their first single on this album, "Way Away," peaked at No. 25 on the modern rock charts and helped the band turn mainstream. The hit single, "Ocean Avenue," premiered on MTV's TRL program and reached No. 1 on the charts quickly. The song even made it to No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. The "Ocean Avenue" album sold over one million copies in the US and all of a sudden, Yellowcard was everywhere.
Their following two albums were released with slightly less buzz but were still successful. "Lights and Sounds" was released in January, 2006. The title track, "Lights and Sounds," was the first single and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks. It was featured on many video games and sold over 90,000 copies in its first week of release. The album was very different in sound from "Ocean Avenue" and it's total sales were low. "Paper Walls," Yellowcard's next album was released in a CD/DVD format. It became the second most popular album on iTunes and the most popular album in the alternative section. This album led to the band supporting Blue October and Linkin Park in their 2007 fall tours. One of their shows with Blue October was recorded and released as a live album in 2008 titled "Live from Las Vegas at the Palms."
In April 2008, Yellowcard announced that they would be going on an "indefinite hiatus" due to personal reasons. They assured their fans they were not breaking up, just taking some time off. The band had small appearances from 2008-2010 and then officially announced their reformation and new record on their official Facebook page in August, 2010.
Yellowcard played their first show after coming back from hiatus at The Glass House in Panoma, California on November 13, 2010. There, Ryan Key announced the title of their new record, "When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes." The new album was released on March 22, 2011.
The band, after losing and gaining numerous members over time, is currently comprised of five members: Ryan Key (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano), Sean Mackin (violin, vocals), Longuineu W. Parsons III (drums, percussion), Ryan Mendez (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Josh Portman (bass guitar). On August 14 2012 the band released their latest album, "Southern Air".
