The Roots Information

The Roots is a Grammy Award winning hip hop/neo soul band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were originally called "The Square Roots" and also go by the names of "The Legendary Roots Crew" and "The Fifth Dynasty." The band formed in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompton. They are known for their eclectic approach to hip-hop.

They released their first album, "Organix," in 1993 and it created enough industry buzz to get them signed by DGC. They released their first album with DGC, "Do You Want More," in 1995 which granted them an appearance at Lollapalooza and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Their first album to break the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 chart was their third release, "Illadelph Halfife." Then their breakout album, "Things Fall Apart," was released in 1999 and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 charts. Since then, the band has had many members leave the group and has released seven studio albums, two EPs, two collaboration albums and became the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. They have been met throughout their long history with critical acclaim.

The group's current members are Black Thought, Questlove, Kamal Gray, F. Knuckles, Captain Kirk Douglas, Damon Bryson, James Poyser and Mark Kelley. Questlove tweeted in July 2012 that the title of The Root's next album will have the initials &TYSYC and that it is currently being recorded. The Roots will perform at Boston's House of Blues on Wednesday, December 26, 2012.
