Philadelphia Phillies Information

The Phillies were established in 1883 as members of the National League. They currently play in the NL East Division. For an old franchise the Phillies have had only mild success in the MLB. Before 2008 their sole World Series victory came in 1980. They hold nine NL East Division titles and six National League Pennants.

The 2008 season for the Phillies was nothing short of historic as they won their second World Series in franchise history. The last time they made it to the final round was in 1993 when they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in six games. After their '93 season, the Phillies would not return to post-season play for another fourteen years.

In 2007 the Phillies advanced to the NLDS but were swept by the Colorado Rockies in three games. They would not be down and out for long with the All-Star cast of infielders Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard to battle alongside lefty ace Cole Hamels. In their 2008 World Series run they defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. They met the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series and beat them out in five games. 2009 featured the club regaining the National crown, only to fall short in the Fall Classic to the New York Yankees in six.

The 2010 Phillies had one of the strongest starting rotations in Major League Baseball between Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt and came in first in their division with a 97-65 record. They made it to the second round of the playoffs, but were eliminated by the World Series champion, San Francisco Giants.

In 2011, the Phillies improved their astounding rotation even further by adding Cliff Lee. They placed first once again at 102-60, but lost in the ALDS to the World Series champion, St. Louis Cardinals.

With the addition of Jonathon Papelbon to close out games for their strong rotation, the Phillies are on track to retain their position on top the NL East for the 2012 season.
