Phil Lesh Information
The original Grateful Dead bassist from 1965 until their disbanding in 1995, Phil Lesh has since been reincarnating the group in one form or another. Lesh continued the tradition of jam band family music with the side project Phil Lesh and Friends- paying homage by playing Grateful Dead originals, common covers as well as songs of his band mates. Lesh also accompanied original Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir in the two man travelling band Ratdog before putting both projects on hold to perform with Weir, Jeff Chimenti, John Kadlecik, Joe Russo, Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson as Furthur, currently touring this fall.
Lesh was very active in the musical switch of bass guitar from playing as a rhythmic timekeeper to a lead instrument in the role of improvisation. An essential member of the Grateful Dead, Lesh constantly pressed the boundaries of the group with his interest in avant-garde music. Lesh and his group Furthur will be on tour until the end of the year, playing major amphitheaters across the country and following the footsteps of Grateful Dead’s tour-heavy, improvisational-led career.
