The New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the NFL’s premier rivalries. With Pittsburgh and their 1970’s dynasty representing the tradition of winning excellence in the NFL it is always a clash when they face off with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots and their recent winning ways. The Patriots have been to the Superbowl seven times with three wins while the Steelers have been to the Superbowl six times and remain undefeated in the NFL’s championship game.
This new school rivalry began in 2001 after Tom Brady took the reins of the Patriots following Drew Bledsoe’s devastating injury. When the two teams met in Pittsburgh for the AFC Championship game it was just the 10th time the number one and number two seeds met for a chance to go to the Superbowl. After Tom Brady is knocked out early in the game Drew Bledsoe is called on to lead the team to victory. Drew answers and the Patriots went on to win 24-17 before going on to win the franchise’s first Superbowl.
In the first meeting between Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady, the teams would meet once again in 2004 when Pittsburgh won in convincing fashion 34-20 to end New England’s record 21 game win-streak. The teams would meet once again in that year’s AFC Championship game where the Patriots get revenge knocking out the Steelers in convincing fashion, 41-27.
Pittsburgh owns the edge in the all-time series 15-11 including the last game played between against New England. The Steelers outlasted the Patriots 25-17 in Pittsburgh’s first win over Tom Brady since the 2004 season. New England has the edge in Superbowl wins in the 21st century 3-2 but every time these two teams meet it’s a battle of Tom Brady’s glamour against Polumalu and the Pittsburgh defense’s grit on the gridiron.
