Mary Poppins Information
Hailing from Londonâ€™s West End, the Olivier and Tony-Award winning musical Mary Poppins fuses elements from the original book series and 1964 Disney film to give new enlightened meaning to the story weâ€™re so familiar with. The production opened in London in 2004 to raving reviews and numerous nominations. Julie Andrews, the original film-version Mary Poppins, even attended a performance in 2005 and praised the cast for their new interpretation.
2010 has proven to be the most successful yet for the musical since its release, with openings of national tours in Copenhagen, The Hague and Melbourne. And for the first time in its Broadway run, New York audiences will have the opportunity to see Mary Poppinsâ€™ original stage stars performing the roles they created together when Gavin Lee re-joins the company as 'Bert' opposite the original 'Mary', West-End co-star Laura Michelle Kelly at the New Amsterdam Theatre beginning 24 Aug 2010.
The story begins when the proper-but-dysfunctional Banks family, which is blessed by the magical presence of super-nanny, Mary Poppins. With the help of the chipper chimney sweep Bert, Poppins helps the Banks family find out how much they mean to each other in spite of their demanding schedules. The show adds songs, plot twists, special effects and deepened characterization unique to the onstage performance. Including many songs from the original film score, including â€œSupercalifragilisticexpialidociousâ€ and â€œSpoonful of Sugarâ€, Mary Poppins will be flying by way of umbrella to Bostonâ€™s Opera House May 28-June 2, 2013.
