Kanye West Information
Kanye West is a prominent hip-hop musician, producer, and fashion designer. West was born and raised in Chicago, a city rarely recognized for breeding a big rap game. West began rapping in third grade. By 1996, he was enrolled in Chicago State University and pursuing a degree in English. Much against his mother’s wishes, who was a chairwoman and professor at Chicago State, West dropped out after his first semester to fully pursue a musical career. (His debut album, The College Dropout refers to this experience.) West began earning recognition by producing for artists such as Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Jay-Z, DMX, Alicia Keys, Common, and Mos Def. Because of this recognition, however, record executives constantly considered him as a producer and not an artist and therefore, West experience difficulty trying to get signed to a label. In 2002, West finally received his big break after he released his single, “Through the Wireâ€, which was inspired by his near-death experience, car accident. In fact, he had recording the single while his mouth had still been wired up. West had finally encouraged record executives to take him seriously as an artist and he was signed to Roc-A-Fella records this year. In 2004, West released his debut album, The College Dropout which sold over 400,000 copies in its first week. Thereafter, West has continued record and produce music. For example, critics regard his albums Late Registration (2005) and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) has two of the best albums of all time. More recently, West released his album Yeezus (2013), and has been spending managing his record label GOOD Music and designing fashion.
