Wouter De Backer is a Belgian-Australian musician and song-writer known as Gotye. He has been compared to the likes of Sting and Peter Gabriel, plays the vocals, guitar, drums, percussion, keyboards, and synthesizer in a combination of indie pop and experimental rock. He is also part of the band The Basics.
He has three studio albums—Boardface, Like Drawing Blood, and Making Mirrors—as well as a remix album, Mixed Blood. The Basics have combined for four additional studio albums as well, including 2007’s Stand Out/Fit In.
After compiling his own four track CD and sending copies out to local radio stations in Australia, interest developed in Gotye and he got a deal for his first album in 2003.
He would perform with The Basics while recording more individual songs before releasing his second album in 2006. The album was successful in Australia, winning him awards such as Most Outstanding New Independent Artist for the Australian Independent Record Chart Awards and an ARIA Award for Best Male Artist. In 2011, Like Drawing Blood was named #11 by Australian radio station, Triple J’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time.
In 2010, Gotye developed his own recording studio in a barn in Australia where he recorded his third album. He performed at the Groovin’ the Moo Music Festival and the Splendour in the Grass Music Festival in 2011. He released Making Mirrors on August 19, reaching #1 on the Australian Charts and making it onto the U.K. and U.S. charts.
On February 1, 2012, he went on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform his hit songs, “Eyes Wide Open,†“Somebody That I Used To Know,†and “State of the Art.â€
He will kick off a European, U.S., and Canadian tour on February 24 in Germany. On April 15 and 22, he will perform at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in California.
