Led by front man Chris Martin, Coldplay has enjoyed a great amount of success since their debut album, Parachutes, was released in late 1999. All five of their albums reached the #1 spot on the UK charts including 2008's Viva La Vida and 2011’s Mylo Xyloto. Often criticized for sounding too much like Radiohead, Coldplay has managed to find a voice that is all their own. They won't deny however, that bands like Radiohead, U2 and Echo & the Bunnymen have had a profound effect on their sound. Much like Radiohead, Coldplay will not compromise their integrity by selling their songs to market products.
The first single off their first album, Parachutes, was “Shiver,†their first top 40 hit. They went on their first headlining tour in June 2000 and went on a North American Tour in 2001, the U.S. Club Tour. They won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album that year.
In 2002, they released their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, in between touring stops. Their tour for the album scanned across five different continents, including North America, Europe, and Australia. Rolling Stone named the band Best Artist and Best Band of the Year in 2003 and the album also won another Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. In 2004, they won the Grammy for Record of the year for their single, “Clocks.â€
They released their third album, X&Y in 2005 after a short break which was the best-selling album of the year. They went on the Twisted Logic Tour later that year, performing at spaces like Coachella, Isle of Wright Festival, and Glastonbury among other places.
2008 marked the release of their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Their tour, Viva la Vida was an enormous success. With strong ticket sales and sold out shows throughout the country, new dates were added to the tour. Coldplay returned to several cities, including Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and D.C. They won three Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Vocal Pop Performance by a Duo/Group for “Viva la Vida†and Best Rock Album of the Year.
Coldplay released their fifth album, Mylo Xyloto in October 2011. They will perform March 4, 2012 at Radio Music Hall, then their tour for the album kicks off Apirl 17 in Canada and will continue on throughout North America.
