Boston Celtics History

The Boston Celtics are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team was founded in 1946 and is currently owned by Boston Basketball Partners LLC. Easily one of the most successful franchises in NBA history, the Boston Celtics have acquired twenty-one Division titles, twenty-one Conference titles and seventeen Championships. The Celtics hold the longest consecutive Championship winning streak of any North American pro sports team. From 1957 to 1969, the team dominated the league by winning eleven championships in thirteen years, and eight in a row from 1959-1966. Hall of Famers Bill Russel, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek and legendary coach Red Auerback helped dominate the league during the late 1950s through the mid 1980s. They had a combined 795-397 record and a total of sixteen Championships. The infamous "Big Three," including Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale, continued to bring the Celtics to the top. Then tragedy hit the Celtics when draft pick Len Bias passed away and star player Reggie Lewis died of a heart attack during his prime. The Celtics went over a decade without even winning a division title (1992-2005). The franchise returned to prominence, however, in the 2007-08 season. A new "Big Three" was formed when Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined Paul Pierce on the team. The trio led the Celtics to their seventeenth Championship in 2008 and also an Eastern Conference title in 2010.
