Yonder Mountain String Band Information

Although the Yonder Mountain String Band was formed in Nederland, CO, its origins go back to Urbana, IL, where college student and banjo enthusiast Dave Johnston met mandolin player Jeff Austin. The two settled in Nederland, both at different times, where they met bass player Ben Kaufmann and guitarist Adam Aijala at a local club. In December 1998, they formed the Yonder Mountain String Band to open for a band at the Fox Theatre in Boulder. Developing a following among bluegrass and jam band fans, they worked their way up the bar and club circuit in the West. In the fall of 1999, they released their debut album, Elevation, on their own Frog Pad Records label and began playing larger venues. They released a live recording as their second album, Mountain Tracks, Vol. 1, in the spring of 2001, and followed with another studio set, Town By Town, in the fall of 2001. Their catalog is made up of ten albums, mostly live recordings, and their latest release, The Show (2009). With band members writing individually, in different pairings and as a collective, the album proves that the group is a collection of creative peers as heard in the rich tapestry of music that makes up The Show.

Yonder Mountain String Band’s most varied and versatile album to date, The Show is an aural passage of the journey that the band members have taken together over the years. Regulars at bluegrass festivals like the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the band's own Northwest String Summit and massive multi-stage events like Austin City Limits Festival, Bonnaroo and Rothbury, the main appeal of the music is Yonder’s “anything goes” attitude, its humor, passion for music, and the band’s personable and unique take on live shows. Younder Mountain String Band brings The Show to Boston’s House of Blues on October 29th before wrapping up their tour November 3rd in PA.
