Washington Capitals information, The Washington Capitals joined the NHL in 1974. In their history they have no Stanley Cups and one Conference Championship in the 1997-98 season. The Capitals have not been successful in making the playoffs until 2008, when they finished on top of the Southeast division with 43 regular season wins. They met the Philadelphia Flyers in the Conference quarterfinals and were defeated in a hard fought seven game series.
The 2009 Capitals were back for another playoff run, again finishing first in the Southeast with a 50-24-8 record. Behind Sergei Federov and Alexander Ovechkin, the Capitals lost in seven games to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Conference Semifinals. This season Washington should have no problem marking themselves as top contenders for 2010 playoff hockey.

Sparked by a scuffle in the corner against the boards, Shawn Thornton and John Erskine threw some heavy blows before heading to the box. [...]
