The Pogues Information

The Pogues are an Irish band that was formed by Shane MacGowan in 1982. Shane was inspired by "The Clash" and their music has often been classified as Celtic Punk and Celtic Fusion. The band starting playing traditional Irish tunes in London pubs and streets but eventually started adding some of MacGowan's original songs to their repertoire. They have a reputation of being a very dynamic, exciting and wild live act and in 2002 was named by "Q" magazine as one of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die". Their first album Red Roses for Me, was almost immediately followed up with their second album Rum Sodomy & the Lash, in 1985. Both albums did well and The Pogues were gathering a devoted fan base. If I Should Fall from Grace with God, was released in 1988, with its huge Christmas hit, "Fairytale of New York", and then Peace and Love was released in 1989, both putting the band in the top 5 in the UK. The band suffered some personal problems and disbanded in 1996, however after a couple years apart and some solo work accomplished by some of the original members, The Pogues reformed for a Christmas tour in 2001. By 2005 the band, again including MacGowan, played dates in the UK with support from the Dropkick Murphys and then re-released their Christmas classic, "Fairytale Of New York" that December, which went straight to number 3 on the UK singles chart.
