The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the NHL in 1992. Eleven years after their inception, they won their first Stanley Cup in 2003, defeating the Calgary Flames in seven games. The Lightning clinched playoff berths for the 2006 and 2007 seasons, but failed to make it past their conference quarterfinals.
The 2008 Lightning did not qualify for the post-season after finishing with a 31-42 record. 2009 marked their second consecutive season without a playoff appearance. They made it back into the playoffs in the 2010 season, after signing a new GM and head coach. They beat the Penguins in the quarter-finals in seven games, swept the Capitals in four games in the semifinals, but fell to the eventual Stanley Cup Champs Bruins in seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals.
This season, the Lightning started off by signing Steven Stamkos to a five-year deal and resigned goalie Dwayne Roloson. In the Southeast division, they are currently placed fourth and will probably not make it into the playoffs. Look for them to finish the season off strong and try to make it back into the playoffs during the 2012-13 season.
