System of a Down is a hard-rock band from Southern California that consists of Serj Tankian (lead vocals), Daron Malakian (guitar), Shavo Odadjian (bass) and John Dolmayan (drums). They have achieved large commercial success having three out of their five albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. They are a four-time Grammy nominee and in 2006 won the award for Best Hard Rock Performance for their song “B.Y.O.B.”
Their self titled debut album helped them gain radio airplay and a rotation on MTV with the singles “Sugar” and “Spiders”. In 2001 they released their second album “Toxicity”, which debuted at No.1 both the American and Canadian charts. The album was driven by the singles “Chop Suey” and “Toxicity”. Following the success of the album the band toured with Slipknot throughout the U.S. and Mexico. Later in the year they released a collection of B-sides from the recording sessions for Toxicity called “Steal This Album”.
In 2005 the band released two albums within 7 months of each other, “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize” both debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. The following year the band announced that they were going on hiatus. Band members confirmed that it would be at least three years. During this period lead vocalist Serj Tankian released a solo album titled “Elect the Dead” and Daron Malakian formed a band called Scars on Broadway.
In 2010 the band officially announced that they would begin touring again and proceeded to tour European festivals. They are currently on tour with dates in both the U.S. and Canada.
