Steve Winwood was born May 12, 1948 in Birmingham, England. Throughout his musical career he has enjoyed many different projects as well as success as a solo artist. Winwood is known for his ability to play multiple instruments and has always had a large following in the United Kingdom.
Before he took his solo musical act to the stage, he was a member of the bands The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Go and Blind Faith. Blind Faith was formed in 1969 with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. After Clapton left to perform a solo act, the remaining trio formed the band known as Ginger Baker’s Air Force.
Winwood has had two of his singles reach the # 1 spot on the Hot 100 charts. In 1986 his song Higher Lover was there for a week and in 1988 the track Roll With It was on top for a total of four weeks.
In late February 2008, Winwood and Clapton performed live at Madison Square Garden in front of a sold out crowd. Steve also joined Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers on their 2008 tour. That year, he also released his ninth solo album, Nine Lives. It debuted at #12 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking it his highest ever debut. He received an honorary degree from Berklee College of Music as well as one from Aston University in Birmingham.
On February 27, 2012, Winwood announced a new tour of the East Coast. It will kick off May 11 in Milwaukee and will continue on until June 3 in New York.
