The Blues were founded in 1967 as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference of the NHL. Since their inception, the Blues do not yet have a Stanley Cup, but have reached the finals three times. From 1979-80 to 2003-04, the Blues qualified for the postseason--a streak that's good for second best for all North American pro sports.
The Blues had not qualified for the playoffs until the 2008-09 season, but lost in the first round to the Canucks. In 2010 they finished at 12th place in the Conference. 2011, however, was a turning point for the Blues. David Backes was announced as the new team captain and in March 2011, the St. Louis Blues were for sale. In April the Blues won their first playoff series since 2002 when they eliminated the San Jose Sharks in five games. They did not make it past the next rough, however, and were ousted by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings.
