The Mustangs compete in the NCAA Division 1 Conference USA and represent Southern Methodist University's 17 varsity programs. They were originally members of the Southwest Conference before joining the C-USA in 1995. The colleges most popular athletic events are held at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Wastcott Field, and Moody Coliseum.

The SMU football team has won a total of three National titles in 1935, 1981, and 1982. They have a total record of 439-477-54 over the years with a 4-6-1 post-season bowl record. The basketball program has yet to win a national championship, but has won their conference fourteen times including their Final Four run in 1956.
