Sarah McLachlan is a Canadian singer and songwriter who has been performing since 1988. Singing since she was a child, she was part of a rock band, The October Game, when she was 17 but it didn’t last. After performing a gig with the band, she was offered a recording contract, but her parents insisted that she finish high school. She signed to Nettwerk in Vancouver and released her debut album, Touch, in 1988. She had her first hit single in “Vox” and opened for The Grapes of Wrath on a national tour of Canada.
It was her second album, Solace, dropping in 1991 that paved the way for her in Canada. Hit singles included “The Path of Thorns (Terms)” and “Into the Fire.” She partnered with Pierre Marchand for the first time and this relationship has been continuous throughout the years.
She had another hit in the 1993 album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and then with 1997’s Surfacing, found international success. She won two Grammy Awards, including for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Building a Mystery” and Best Pop Instrumental Performance with “Last Dance.” That year, she created Lilith Fair, a tour that featured all female performers. Her 1998 single “Angel” was also featured in the film City of Angels, bumping her album up to #1 on the Billboard chart.
In 1999 she released her live album, Mirrorball and performed the song “”When She Loved Me” as the part of Jessie from Toy Story 2. The song was nominated for an Oscar and she performed it at the live show. She was featured on a number of albums for other artists, including Delerium, Stevie Nicks, and Bryan Adams, and then performed with Sheryl Crow at Crow’s Live from Central Park performance in 1999. At a benefit concert in Canda in 2002, she performed with Bryan Adams, Jann Arden, Barenaked Ladies, and Chantal Kreviazuk.
It wasn’t until 2003 when she released her next album, Afterglow. Hit singles off the album included “Fallen,” “Stupid,” and “World on Fire.” She had a Christmas album in 2006, Wintersong, which covered a number of classic Christmas hits and covers of songs from Joni Mitchell and John Lennon.
She had a number of appearances in the late 2000s including on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Portlandia, and performances of “I Will Remember You” and “Angel” at a 2011 ceremony to remember the attacks on 9/11.
Her greatest hits album was released in 2008 entitled, Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan, and her latest album, Laws of Illusion, was released in 2010. In the summer of 2011, she had a number of special performances with symphonies around the U.S., and as a follow-up, announced a summer 2012 tour. Kicking off in Toronto on June 22, she will continue on to hit ten U.S. cities into July.
