Rufus Wainwright Information

Following the release of his sixth studio album All Days are Nights: Songs for Lulu, Rufus Wainwright’s bustling tour schedule planned for the remainder of 2010 indicates what could be his form of coping with the recent passing of his mother, Kate McGarrigle, from cancer. This April 2010 album was conceived as a simple piano and vocal combination, a clear-cut release following the many projects he’s undertook in the past few years, including a tribute concert for Judy Garland, Wainwright’s most commercially successful album to date, Release the Stars and an annual Christmas show for his mother. The album’s main inspirations come from literature mostly, with dark Shakespearean sonnets that capture his tenor vocals at the “purest, most uninterrupted expression yet” (NME.com).

The son of two folk singers, Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Rufus Wainwright was brought up alongside his sister Martha, playing the piano since age six and playing for his mother’s band The McGarrigle Sisters and Family. With a strong liking for opera music since a young age, Wainwright has cited his sources of inspiration as Edith Piaf and Judy Garland, debuting as a solo artist at the age of 14. In 1998, following the release of his self-titled album, he was named by Rolling Stone the “Best New Artist” of the year, with the album named one of the year’s best as well. Wainwright came out as homosexual as a teenage and recently announced his support of gay marriage since meeting his significant other, Jorn Weisbrodt.

In promotion of All Days are Nights: Songs for Lulu, Rufus Wainwright is touring North America and Europe throughout the summer, hitting the Boston Opera House on August 3rd. This week Wainwright is scheduled to appear at the Meltdown Festival in London, as a celebration for his mother, and he will wrap up his season of touring in November with a show at Royal Albert Hall in London.
