The Oakland Raiders were founded in 1960 but did not achieve success until Al Davis joined them in 1963. From a 1-13 mark in 1962, Oakland improved to 10-4 in 1963 and Davis was named the AFL Coach of the Year. In the 30-year period dating back to when Davis took over in 1963 up through 1992, the Raiders' winning record of .661 with 285 victories, 146 losses and 11 ties ranks as the best among all major sports teams.
In addition to Davis himself, eleven players -- Jim Otto, George Blanda, Willie Brown, Gene Upshaw, Art Shell, Fred Biletnikoff, Ted Hendricks, Mike Haynes, Howie Long, Dave Casper, and Marcus Allen and one coach, John Madden-- have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Five Raiders coaches have been named either AFL or NFL Coach of the Year.
Since their run at the Super Bowl in 2002, Oakland has not been able to put together more than five wins in any single season up to 2009. They are the first team in NFL history to lose at least 11 games in seven straight seasons. In 2009, the Raiders hired Tom Cable to take over as head coach. The team kept their dismal streak alive, finishing the regular season at 5-11.
In 2010, the Raiders improved their record to 8-8, but missed out on the playoffs. Longtime owner Al Davis passed away in the beginning of the season. They ended once again at 8-8 in a three way tie for first place in the division and for a spot in the playoffs. They lost the tie-breaker and the Broncos headed into the postseason. In 2012, the Raiders will look to continue improving and try to get back into the playoffs.
