Announcement: The New York Yankees have won their 27th World Championship. 2010 Yankees tickets will be available soon.
One of the most recognizable professional baseball teams in the world, the New York Yankees truly personify a world class organization. In their storied history the Yankees have won 26 World Series titles, out of the unprecedented 39 World Series appearances they have made since their inception. The Yankees won the AL East eight consecutive years in a row before last season when the Boston Red Sox captured the title ending the streak. During their run of dominance, the Yankees won the World Series in '98, '99, '00. Their infamous rivalry with the Red Sox has intensified over the past five seasons. The Sox finally had their day over the Yankees when they rebounded from a 3-0 deficit in the 2004 ALCS and of course, went on to win their first World Series title since 1918. The ALCS collapse in 2004 was quite a surprise for most Yankee fans.
During the 2007 off-season some changes took place in Yankee land. Longtime manager Joe Torre did not re-sign with the club, opting for the managerial position in Los Angeles for the Dodgers. Former Yankee’s catcher, Joe Girardi was hired to replace the future hall of fame skipper, hoping to return the franchise to their winning ways.
The 2008 season was an injury-plagued one. The Yanks not only lost their ace Chien Ming Wang for the season, but also the ability to play Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui in the field. Alex Rodriguez, Joba Chamberlain, Dan Giese, Johnny Damon, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Jonathan Albaladejo, and Wilson Betemit all spent a portion of the season on the disabled list. New York finished their tough season with a record of 89-73, six games behind the Red Sox and missing the playoffs for the first time since 1994. When the Yanks open up their 2009 season, it will be at the new Yankee Stadium.
