The New Mexico Lobos take part in the NCAA Division 1 Mountain West Conference. Behind mascots Lobo and Lobo Lucy, players and fans wear school colors cherry and silver with pride when in competition. The Basketball program at UNM is most well known for its venue, University Arena or "The Pit." The arena played host to the 1983 NCAA basketball championship when North Carolina State University upset the University of Houston. The women's basketball team has won their conference in four of the past five years. Lobos football has proved successful with ten bowl appearances and four conference titles.
