The Garden State basketball team started their existence in the American Basketball Association (ABA) playing in a converted armory in Teaneck, New Jersey. They were known then as the Americans and on October 23, 1967 they played their first game against the Pittsburgh Pipers. One year later, the team's location moved to New York's Long Island. Along with the move, their name was changed to the Nets to rhyme with the New York area sports teams, the baseball Mets and the football Jets.
The team currently plays in the Continental Airlines Arena in the New Jersey Meadowlands; however they are in the final stages of planning and if approved, the team will make the move back across the river to Brooklyn for the 2010-2011 season, with help of part owner, Jay-Z.
The nets are currently struggling this season and seem almost out of playoff contention. Vince Carter and Devin Harris have been scoring
21 points a game for New Jersey, but other players are going to have to step up for them to do damage in the Eastern Conference.
