Michael Franti Information

Michael Franti has been dubbed “the sound of sunshine”, thus the title of his upcoming album, The Sound of Sunshine. Franti & Spearhead’s music is considered a blend of hip-hop with a variety of other styles including funk, reggae, jazz, folk and rock. Franti is known for his carefree lifestyle, deciding back in 2000 to not wear shoes for three days. He has since been living barefooted, with the exception of occasionally wearing flip-flops when mandatory by law, such as at airports and restaurants.

Franti started his music career in the late 80’s as part of an industrial punk band, The Beatnigs in college. His next project was a politically-fueled electronic band known as Disposable Heroes. In 1994 Michael Franti formed Spearhead and has since increasingly found his own voice and brand of organic success. Franti and Spearhead’s latest album, 2008’s All Rebel Rockers, was recorded in Jamaica and became the biggest hit of Franti’s career, hitting the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 and generated his biggest hit, Top 20 “Say Hey (I Love You)”.

Just last year Franti had been opening for one of the most talked about artists of the year, John Mayer. Needless to say he is probably overwhelmed with joy to be headlining once again. The single from his new album, The Sound of Sunshine, “Shake It” was released on iTunes May 25th, with the full length album expected later this summer. Franti calls the album “a bright, beautiful song cycle created to bring all kinds of listeners a sense of hope during rough and rainy times”. The dates of the summer tour run through August, beginning tomorrow night in Virginia.
