The Miami Dolphins were established in 1966 as part of the American Football League. In 1970, they joined the National Football League when the AFL-NFL merger occurred. The next season featured a Super Bowl run that ended in a 24-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. In 1972, they became the only team in NFL history to remain perfect after winning all 14 regular-season games, NFL playoff games, and Super Bowl VII. The '73 Dolphins were able to claim victory in Super Bowl VIII, marking the first time any NFL team has ever contested for three straight titles.
Quarterback Dan Marino brought the franchise success through the 1980's and 90's, leading the Dolphins to five Division titles, 10 playoff appearances, and Super Bowl XIX before retiring after the 1999 football season. Despite never being on a Super Bowl-winning team, 9x Pro Bowler is recognized as one of the greatest quarterbacks in American football history.
The Dolphins last reached post-season in 2008 when they captured the Division with an 11-5 regular season record. They ultimately fell to the Baltimore Ravens in a hard fought 27-9 first round playoff battle. The following year, Miami finished at 7-9 behind the New England Patriots and New York Jets. The 2010 Dolphins placed third with a 7-9 record and no playoff appearance. They came back in 2011 with a slightly worsened record of 6-10. The team is looking forward to improving in the upcoming season.
