Maxwell is an R&B singer who has served as one of the leading factors in the creation and significance of the neo-soul sub-genre. Maxwell recorded his first album "Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite" in the early 1990's. Columbia records were nervous at first about the release and did not showcase it until 1996. The record went on to sell 2 million copies and was certified double platinum. His most popular single "Fortunate" hit the U.S. R&B charts in 1998 and climbed up to the #1 spot in 1999. The song was written by fellow R&B singer-songwriter R. Kelly. After several years on hiatus, Maxwell returned in 2009 to release BLACKsummers’night his fourth studio album, his second album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Albums Top 200 chart. The album and its single “Pretty Wings” were nominated for 6 Grammys and was performed at the 2009 BET Awards.
