The Dodgers were established in 1883 as the Brooklyn Dodgers until their move to Los Angeles in 1958. The LA Dodgers are one of the most successful franchises in MLB history with six World Series titles and 21 NL Pennants to their credit.

Last season the Dodgers won the NL West division with an 84-78 record. With Joe Torre as their new head coach, LA was automatically thought to be in playoff contention at the start of the season. During a small mid-season drought the front office realized they had to make some moves to stay in the race. After the All-Star break the Dodgers traded for infielders Angel Berroa and Casey Blake, and later acquired Manny Ramirez in a block-buster deal from the Boston Red Sox. With this newly improved roster LA went on to knock of the Chicago Cubs in a 3-0 sweep in the NLDS. They advanced to the NLCS and lost to the Philadelphia Phillies, who ultimately went on to win the World Series.

LA is trying to sign back Manny Ramirez as their franchise player for 2009. He recently turned down a $25 million one-year contract with hopes that he can sign a long term deal for 4-5 years. It will be interesting to see what the result is from the off-season negotiations. With Manny the Dodgers will be ready for another division title and will set their goals high in the playoffs. If Ramirez is to go elsewhere, LA will have to look for other talent to fill the gaps in the line up. Either way look for the Dodgers to do some damage as they look to improve further from last years successful season.
