James Murphy made a name for himself in the music industry as a producer and co-founder of DFA Records before taking on the stage as LCD Soundsystem. James Murphy has since established himself as an entrancing stage presence, first gaining attention for his eight-minute epics with witty, authentic narratives over raw, electronic beats. The debut LCD Soundsystem was released to critical acclaim in 2005, featuring “Daft Punk is Playing in My House” among those dance hall favorites. The follow-up, Sound of Silver (2007), was released to universal critical acclaim as well, topping charts as the best record of the year.
With the rising anticipation for the third studio album, Murphy confirmed that it was likely to be the bands last, in hopes to regain normalcy in the members’ lives. In wanting to outdo his previous works, Murphy released This is Happening (2010) to much hype, assuring that it surpasses the mastery of his other albums.
LCD Soundsystem tends to go above and beyond when live, recreating the synthesized feel of their party anthems through the use of heavy lighting- commanding rave-style dancing. The group just recently revealed that their final gig will take place on Saturday, April 2nd at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. They made the official announcement through their website in a statement: “We are retiring from the game. Gettin’ out, movin’ on. But for just one more night, we will be playing with friends and family for nearly 3 hours. Playing stuff we’ve never played before and going out with a bang, and we’d like you to be there.”
