James Taylor information, James Taylor is an American singer/songwriter from New England. His career began in the mid 1960's amongst the era of self acclaimed singer/songwriters like Carol King, John Denver, and Joni Mitchell. Taylor is known for his sensitive and gentle singing voice on his acoustic songs. Taylor first learned the cello as a child and then made the transition to guitar in early 1960. As he got older, his career would be laced with addiction, divorce and depression, all things that he managed to overcome in his later years. His first marriage to singer Carly Simon lasted ten years. The pair had three children together. Simon and Taylor were later divorced in 1982. He then remarried to Caroline Smedvig and had twin sons Rufus and Henry who currently have their own solo musical careers.

Taylor's second album, "Sweet Baby James", was his first career success. The most popular single from that album, "Fire and Rain", was about his experience in an asylum and the suicide of a friend. The success of that single peaked interest in his debut album, "James Taylor," that at first suffered from poor reviews; therefore giving fame to the leading single from that album, "Carolina in My Mind". James Taylor began touring regularly in 1988 and became especially popular in the American summer outdoor amphitheatre circuit. His concerts still continue to feature songs from all over his career and are performed in great grandeur with the aid of his band and back up singers.

With great interest in being visibly active in environmental and progressive activism, James Taylor joined the October 2004 "Vote for Change" tour playing a series of concerts in the American swing states. The tour was organized by MoveOn.org with the goal of mobilizing people to vote for Kerry and against George W. Bush in that year's political campaign.

Over the course of his long career, James Taylor has earned forty gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards and five Grammy Awards for a catalog running from 1970's "Sweet Baby James" to his Grammy Award winning effort's "Hourglass" and "October Road". His first Greatest hits album earned RIAA's elite Diamond Award which is given for sales in excess of ten million units in the US. James Taylor was later inducted into both the Rock n' Roll and Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2000. In his career he has sold forty million albums and has been labeled by TIME Magazine as the, "harbinger of the singer and songwriter era".
