Construction on Fenway Park began in 1911 and the Park officially opened on 4/20/1912. With the closing of Tigers Stadium, Fenway Park is now the oldest ballpark still in use. Boston natives and baseball enthusiasts love the intimate and classic feel of the old ballpark. This alone has allowed the park to last all these years. Rather than build a new Stadium for the Boston Red Sox, ownership over the years has chosen to add to the existing ballpark. The recent additions of seats on top of the famed Green Monster, and a new right field roof deck pavilion, have vastly improved the existing Fenway Park. The increase in capacity also helps the Red Sox raise the revenue they need to keep their team competitive.
The current capacity of Fenway Park is 36,200, but that will increase again for the 2006 season. The Boston Red Sox will open up the enclosed .406 Club and add 852 pavilion club seats, 745 pavilion box seats, and approximately 200 pavilion standing-room seats along the left- and right-field lines.
