The Pirates of East Carolina University compete in the NCAA Division 1 Conference USA. They field 14 varsity teams with football, swimming and diving as their most recognized sports. Playing fields include Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, and Clark-LeClair Stadium.

ECU football has earned a total record of 381-352-11 with an 8-6 bowl record. Since their inaugural season in 1932, the program has won six conference titles and produced over 20 All-Americans. The University’s first National championship came from men's swimming and diving in 1957. Over 87 ECU swimmers and divers have been ranked All-American.
