With a seating capacity of 12,993 for basketball games and 14,500 for hockey games the Dunkin Donuts center has been the premier place to catch a game in Providence, RI since 1972. Originally named the Providence Civic Center the indoor area was renamed in 2001 when Dunkin Donuts signed a lease for naming rights. Built to house the Providence College Friars, the arena is now also called home by the Providence Bruins of the AHL.
Since 1980 the arena has been a host to many collegiate tournaments including the Big East Conference of menís basketball. Although sporting events are the reason the arena was built is now a major stopping point for some of the biggest national tours around. Well known also for playing host to the WWF and WWE as they make their way through the country.
In December 2005 the center was bought by the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority. The new owners have already started a major reconstruction of the arena that will mean a greater venue with better seating and higher capacities. Soon to be a state of the art venue for basketball, hockey, professional wrestling and national concert tours.
The Providence College Friars ended Pittsburgh’s brief reign as the top-ranked NCAA team last night.
