Detroit Lions Information

The Detroit Lions are members of the North Division of the NFC. They play their home games currently at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. The team was founded in 1929 as an independent professional team and were originally called the Portsmouth Spartans from Portsmouth, Ohio. They joined the NFL quickly, however, in the 1930 season. The team was purchased in 1934 and moved to Detroit. Since then, the Lions have won four NFL Championships but not one since 1957. They have the second-longest NFL championship drought second only to the Arizona Cardinals. The Lions have never qualified for the Super Bowl and in 2008 became the only team in NFL history to lose all 16 regular season games.

Last season the 2011 Detroit Lions ended the regular season with a record of 10-6. This was the Lions' first winning season since 2000. The team beat the San Diego Chargers and clinched a NFC Wildcard spot in the playoffs. They went on to lose the Wild Card Playoffs to the New Orleans Saints but it was their first playoff berth since 1999. The Lion's have improved their record consecutively over the last three seasons and hope to continue this streak this season. Their most valuable players this year include wide receiver Calvin Johnson, quarterback Matthew Stafford, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, defensive tackle Corey Williams and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch.
