After 2005 the Avalanche have reached the playoffs two out of four times. In 2006 and 2008 they advanced to the Conference Semifinals, but were swept on both occasions. Last season they hit their low point, finishing at 5th place in the Northwest Division. Team captain Joe Sakic on July 9th, 2009 retired after twenty hard fought seasons in the NHL.
