The Chippewas represent Central Michigan University's 16 intercollegiate athletic programs that compete in the NCAA Division 1 Mid-American Conference. They are named after the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, who live nearby and have shared a very positive relationship with the University over the years. Primary playing fields for the Chippewas include Kelly/Shorts Stadium and Daniel P. Rose Center.

The school’s football team is most well known around campus. Over the years they have won 15 conference titles and 1 National Championship in 1974 (Division II). Their last bowl appearance was in 2008 when they lost to Florida Atlantic in the 2008 Motor City Bowl.
