The Boston Red Sox are one of sports' most storied franchises. Established in 1901, Boston's fan base has grown into one of the most devoted in all of sports. The Boston Americans (as they were known as at the time) won the first World Series in 1903, and have won championships in 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004 and 2007. In 2004, led by the bats of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez and the arms of Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez, the Sox made a historic comeback against the rival Yankees to win the American League Championship after trailing 3-0. They went on to sweep the Cardinals to take their first world championship in 86 years.
After being swept out of the playoffs in 2005 and finishing in third place in 2006, the 2007 Sox team returned with a vengeance. Red Sox tickets sold at a record pace right from opening day. Jonathan Papelbon was dominant in the closer role, Mike Lowell had a career season, and AL Rookie of the year Dustin Pedroia led a core of young players. That year the Sox won 96 regular season games; including 20 by CY Young runner-up Josh Beckett, 17 by veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, and 15 from Daisuke Matsuzaka in his first season outside of Japan. On September 1st, rookie right-hander Clay Buchholz threw a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in just his second Major-League start. The '07 World Series campaign solidified the Red Sox as one of the top MLB teams of the decade.
The Sox opened their 2008 in Japan against the A's. Jon Lester became the second Sox pitcher to toss a no-no in two years, shutting down the Kansas City Royals at Fenway. They went to the Playoffs as the Wild Card team, beating the Los Angeles Angels in the ALDS, but eventually lost in the ALCS in seven games to the Tampa Bay Rays. 2009 concluded in an ALDS rematch with LA, but this time around, the Angels were ready to play spoiler en route to their second championship series appearance in five years.
The Boston front office went back to work in the off-season in, and acquired free agent John Lackey while extending ace Josh Beckett's contract. The injury-plagued campaign led Boston to finish third behind the Yankees and Rays in the AL East at 89-73.
2011 started off as a dream year, but ended in defeat. The Red Sox added high-caliber players, Adrian Gonzales and Carl Crawford, but the team started off poorly. After a slow start, the talent kicked in and the Red Sox raged throughout the summer. They were poised to make another post season, but after a rough September, the decision came down to the last day of the season. In a disappointing end, the Red Sox lost to the Orioles and with a win by the Tampa Bay Rays, lost out on the wild card slot.
After finishing third for the third season in a row, in 2012, the Red Sox enter the season with a new manager and the drive to prove themselves. With a healthy rotation and one of the hottest offenses still in place, the Red Sox are determined to leave the 2011 season behind and start off strong in 2012. They will be led once again by heavy hitters Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, and Adrian Gonzales. Their pitching staff will have three of the top players in baseball when healthy: Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, and Clay Bucholz, as well as Daniel Bard who comes to the rotation from the bullpen. With a new, young closer in place, Andrew Bailey, the Red Sox are excited to get started and win.
