Like all years 2011 will be remembered for some highs and lows. Looking at Boston area events for the year there was nothing more exciting in Boston sports than the run the Boston Bruins had in the Stanley Cup Playoffs culminating in their 1st Championship since 1972. (more)
Longtime rock band U2 is set to perform additional concert dates in their rescheduled 2011 North American tour. They currently have 22 shows planned from May 14h to July 26th. The New Meadowlands Stadium will welcome them in on July 20th before they make their way to the TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on the 23rd. The last scheduled performance to date will take place in Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field on July 26th. Other cities to play host to U2 include Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Oakland, Philadelphia, Chicago and Nashville.
The previously arranged 2010 U2 tour was postponed following a serious injury to lead singer Bono’s back. They are now recording with hopes to release their 12th studio album in the near future. “At the moment it looks like we will put out the album next because it’s just happening so easily,” explained Bono in a recent interview. “When you enter the studio with the roar of the crowd in your ears, you know what works. If you take musicians away from the stage too much, they become quite abstract in their heads…You listen to the Sex Pistols or Nirvana or the first MGMT album and you don’t scratch your chin. You say, ‘Wow, that’s extraordinary’.” Check back for more tour and album updates.

Two months after undergoing emergency back surgery, U2 frontman Bono has announced that he is back on track, now able to “sit, stand and move around a bit”. Although that doesn’t exactly sound positive enough for us to expect an onstage return, an video message posted to U2.com assures fans that the band are currently preparing themselves for the opening of their European Tour opener in Turin next month. The video’s main message was a thank you to fans worldwide for “standing by” U2.
While U2 was unable to perform for their original U2 360 ° North American June and July tour dates, the band has rescheduled the concert dates for spring 2011, booking the shows to span through May 24 to July 23rd, honoring the tickets to the previously cancelled shows. Rather than opting to reschedule the entire world tour, U2 decided to reschedule the North American leg around the other dates, with the US tour set for mid-2011. So far all the European tour dates have remained unaffected by Bono’s sudden injury, much to the band’s relief, taking place from August 6th in Italy to October 3rd in Portugal. 11 of the 22 European dates have already been sold out, and opening bands touring with U2 include Kasabian, Snow Patrol, OneRepublic, and Interpol.
After U2 frontman Bono recently underwent an emergency spine surgery following a back injury, it was announced that the North American leg of the band’s U2360° tour has been postponed. Bono was given doctor’s orders to complete an eight week rehabilitation program. The show dates are from June 3rd at Salt Lake City through July 19th at New Jersey’s Meadowlands Stadium, four in Canada and 12 in the US. It was confirmed this morning that the shows have been rescheduled for 2011. Live Nation encourages that ticket holders keep their tickets and assures that more information will follow shortly.
Speaking of the cancellation, Paul Guinness said, “For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow… His concerns about more than a million ticket buyers whose plans have been turned upside down, we all share, but the most important thing right now is that Bono make a full recovery.”
Bono has also confirmed that the band was forced to cancel their headlining appearance at Glastonbury Festival in the UK June 23rd. In telling Michael Eavis, Bono said “I’m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something special- we even wrote a song especially for the festival.” There has been no mention to whether Glastonbury has a backup headlining act.

U2 frontman Bono recently underwent emergency back surgery this morning, which could result in the groups 360-summer tour dates to be postponed or cancelled. Band manager Paul McGuiness spoke out in regards to their future plans, saying “it’s unfortunate that we’re inconveniencing fans, and we will make plans to reinstate there dates as soon as possible.”
The 50-year old was originally scheduled to join the rest of the band in Salt Lake City next week to start practicing for their nation-wide string of shows. The official U2 website released a statement that reads: “He was admitted to a specialist neurosurgery unit in a Munich hospital. Bono will spend the next few days there before returning home to recuperate.” Check back for more U2 tour updates.
A new U2 song ‘Winter’ is now available to listen to at U2.com. The song is not from their current or next album but from the soundtrack to the new Jim Sheridan movie, ‘Brothers’. U2 wrote the song for Sheridan’s film after screening an early version of it last year. The film stars Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal and is now showing nationwide.
U2 is still adding shows for their second go around of the 360 tour. U2 tickets are now available for several shows with new concert announcements expected throughout the Winter. Fans in Boston are still hopeful for a local U2 show with nothing closer than New Jersey currently scheduled for 2010.
Rolling Stone Magazine interviewed U2 frontman Bono about the continuation of their widely popular ’360 Tour,’ along with future plans for the group in 2010. “We’ve been playing really well on the tour and getting better and better, and we need to distill whatever we have into some songs,” said Bono. “I would like to put out an album quickly, but we’re only going to do it if it’s great.”
The New York Times, The Observer, and Canada Sun Media have all reported U2′s plans to release an album sometime next year. Bono confirmed to Rolling Stone that the album will be titled “Songs of Ascent.” Look for more U2 updates here on the AceTicket Blog!
