Yankees Top Rays 6-4, Reclaim First Place in AL East

Russell Martin drove in two runs in the fourth inning and homered later in the sixth, lifting the New York Yankees to win 6-4 over the Tampa Bay Rays last night at Tropicana Field. Hiroki Kuroda was able to notch the W after letting up four runs on eight hits through six innings on the mound. (more)

Belichick, Patriots Prepare for Tennessee

Following a tough week of roster cuts headlined by Deion Branch and Brian Hoyer, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has now turned his attention to the Tennessee Titans with his 53-man roster set. The Patriots finished 1-3 in their recent preseason stint. The team will officially be tested for the first time this Sunday at LP Field. (more)

Lavarnway Homers, Sox Snap 7-Game Skid

Ryan Lavarnway hit a solo shot to left field in the top of the sixth inning to lift the Boston Red Sox past the Seattle Mariners 4-3 last night at Safeco Field. The Red Sox bullpen held the Mariners scoreless on just one hit in the remaining four innings. The victory helped Boston snap their recent seven-game losing streak. (more)

Patriots Work Out Backup QB Kafka

The New England Patriots recently brought in free agent quarterback Mike Kafka to work out with the team on Tuesday. The Philadelphia Eagles had just released the 25-year old after opting to keep rookie Nick Foles and veteran Trent Edwards to back up starting QB Michael Vick. Kafka was drafted by the Eagles in the fourth round in 2010. (more)

Lakers Set to Retire Shaq’s No. 34

The Los Angeles Lakers will honor future Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal by retiring his No. 34 jersey. The ceremony will take place during LA’s April 2nd game against the Dallas Mavericks. O’Neal is one of three Lakers to be honored this season. (more)

Boras Will Seek Top Dollar for Ellsbury

Rumored to have been placed on waivers by the Boston Red Sox last week, Jacoby Ellsbury is viewed by general manager Ben Cherington as the type of player “we want here.” Despite trade rumors surrounding the 28-year old center fielder in the midst of Boston’s blockbuster deal with the LA Dodgers, there was no confirmation as to whether the Red Sox were trying to clean up even more than expected. Adele Ojomo capitalized on his final opportunity to shine in preseason football, forcing a fumble to set up a 32-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes with 1:03 left on the clock for the New York Giants to win over the New England Patriots 6-3 Wednesday night at MetLife Stadium. (more)

NHL Makes 2nd Proposal to Players

The NHL has recently come back with their second proposal, which was presented to the NHL Players Association at the league offices in Manhattan on Tuesday. The two sides have a number of issues to negotiate if they plan on kicking off the season at the scheduled October 11th start date. (more)
