The Chicago Blackhawks produced three goals in the second period following a scoreless first block in the process of advancing to round 3 over the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 Tuesday at General Motors Place. Troy Brouwer was first to tack one on the board for Chicago two minutes into the second before Kris Versteeg found the net just 36 seconds later. Dave Bollard came through on a short-handed breakaway just before the start of the third. The Hawks maintained the momentum from there, outscoring Vancouver 2-1 in the final 20 minutes of regulation.
“Bolland’s goal at the end of the second was the most important goal of the game,” said Chicago captain Jonathan Toews. “It gave us that distance and confidence we could hold a lead going into the third period.” Chicago will now prepare to challenge the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Finals starting Sunday, May 16th. Sharks veteran Joe Thornton notched a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of play, but the Detroit Red Wings rallied back with four unanswered to steal the 4-2 W Tuesday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. Daniel Cleary and Henrik Zetterberg were able to tie it up in a span of five minutes towards the end of the initial block. Following a scoreless second period, the Red Wings took over again with Derek Meech and Patrick Eaves scoring to overcome the first place Sharks.
San Jose has ranked high in the NHL standings all season long. The Red Wings are currently fighting for a playoff spot, but its evident the defending Western Conference champs can still handle any team in the league.
“You always like to measure yourself up to the best,” said Meech. “That’s the position we’ve been in the past couple of years. These guys are at the top of the league. Every team is ready to play these guys all the time. We just have to make sure now that we’re ready to play every team that we come across.” The Sharks will next matchup against the St Louis Blues on Thursday. Detroit is scheduled for a game against the Anaheim Ducks tonight at 10:00 PM.
Eight different players from the San Jose Sharks were able to find the net in last night’s clinic against the Calgary Flames at the HP Pavilion. Head coach Todd McLellan switched his lines before the start of the contest, resulting in his squad to post 9 goals to Calgary’s 1. The victory matched the most lopsided game in Sharks franchise history when they beat the Flames 8-0 in December of 2000.
Coach McLellan chose to credit his players more so despite the recent changes, saying ”I just think they got it going, and it’s going their way right now. Sometimes a change here and there can trigger it, but in this case I don’t think that’s it.” Calgary (26-18-6) will look to earn their first win of the month against the Chicago Blackhawks this coming Thursday. San Jose is currently making their way to LA to matchup with the Kings tonight at 10:30 PM ET.
Zdeno Chara notched the game-winning goal in round four of yesterday’s shootout for his Boston Bruins to claim victory over the San Jose Sharks at the HP Pavilion. The overall defensive battle featured just two scores in the second period. Daniel Paille first found the net 2:50 into the block before Joe Thornton tied it up just minutes later. Tim Thomas came through with 41 saves for the B’s.
“This is an important time for us,” said Thomas. “We’re down in manpower and when you put in the amount of work we did tonight, to get rewarded with two points is nice. Whether it will help us at the end of the season, we’ll find out.” The Bruins will next face off against the LA Kings this Saturday. Boston Bruins tickets are available right here at Ace!
The two top teams in the NHL met up at the TD Banknorth Garden on Tuesday night. The Eastern-conference-leading Boston Bruins had 85 points, and the Sharks topped the West with 79. Milan Lucic had two goals in the first period to give the B’s a 2-1 lead for most of the game. Unfortunately for Boston, their solid game would fall apart in the third period.
Boston was 0-4 on the power play, and sloppy play late in the game led to a four-goal third period for the Shark, including a 9:48 goal by former Bruin Joe Thornton. Shark left winger Ryane Clone took home the first star, with an outstanding 3 assists (including the game tying and game winning goals). Boston’s left winger Lucic’s two goals got him the second star.
The Boston Bruins embark on a six-game road trip starting with a game against the Devils in NJ on Friday, Feburary 13th.

Recap – The San Jose Sharks still send the Boston Bruins thank you cards for dealing them center Joe Thornton back in 2005. Thornton has been dominant in the Western Conference and continues to lead the Sharks to another great season. The alternate team captain is 2nd in the league in assists with 42 and just makes all the players around him better. Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov has been a workhorse in net playing 2800 of 2905 minutes this season, good for 2nd most in the league. He also has 5 shutout victories under his belt so far this year. The team has an incredible road record of (16-4-2), and always are a tough game.
2nd Half – The Sharks philosophy is simple, win by playing great defense. Nabokov is the cornerstone in the plan but the team buys into the defensive mindset. Having allowed only 118 goals through 48 games, the Sharks boast the third lowest GAA in the NHL. They need to figure out a way to play a little better at home, but besides that they look great.
Team Name: San Jose Sharks (26-15-7)
Pacific Division Standing: 3rd place
