Recap – It’s rare to find a team as well balanced as the Carolina Hurricanes, but in the first half of the NHL season they played together and it showed. Although their record does not immediately jump out at you, the numbers do not lie that the offensive stats were equally spread out. Seven skaters on the Hurricanes had 30 or more points through the first 52 games of the team’s season and that helped catapult the team into the top spot of the division.
2nd Half – The Hurricanes will make the playoffs but the reason why they will not advance is their flakey defense. They have allowed a league high of 170 goals and do not seem to have the answer to stop the heavy fire they’ve been under. Goaltender Cam Ward has flashed signs of brilliance in the 3rd NHL season, including a 35 save shutout victory on Nov. 5th vs. Washington. The Canes need more of those types of efforts to be seen as any type of playoff threat.
