The Philadelphia Phillies produced four runs in the ninth inning for the bullpen to easily shut the door from there to defeat their interleague rival New York Yankees 7-1 yesterday in the Bronx. Kyle Kendrick was stellar on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings of work. The young right-hander is 4-1 with a 3.20 ERA in his last eight starts. “I feel like I’m getting better every time I’m out there,” he said. “I think it’s just learning and maturing.”
Ryan Howard started things off for the Phillies in the top of the fourth with a single to right to score Shane Victorino and Placido Polanco. Victorino then stepped back up to the plate in the fifth to belt a two-run homer for Philadelphia to gain the initial 3-1 advantage. The Yankees could only follow up with one run, courtesy of Robinson Cano’s single to right to bring in Mark Teixeira.
The Phillies are now scheduled to return to Citizens Bank Park for a weekend series against the Minnesota Twins. The club will then play host to the Cleveland Indians for three games starting Tuesday, June 22nd. Philadelphia Phillies tickets are available now with us at Ace!
The Philadelphia Phillies have recently been in contact with Pedro Martinez with hopes to bring in the veteran right-hander for the second half of the season. “We have talked to his agent, but there’s nothing so far,” said Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. “We are not negotiating, but we’ve been talking to him. It all depends on whether he wants to play or not.”
Martinez, a 3x Cy Young Award winner, came back in August last season to assist the Phillies in their run to a second National League title in two years. During the regular season he was 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA. He posted a 3.71 ERA in a pair of losing efforts against his longtime rival New York Yankees in the World Series.
A source close to Pedro has said for the 38-year old to be training in the Dominican Republic and Miami with hopes to return by the end of the summer. The Phillies are currently in the midst of interleague play with games scheduled against the Yankees, Twins and Indians over the next two weeks. Philadelphia Phillies tickets are now available!
Matt Carle and Ville Leino supplied the early goals in the first 10 minutes of play for the Philadelphia Flyers to cruise past the New Jersey Devils 5-1 yesterday at the Wachovia Center. Courtesy of Kimmo Timonen and Lukas Krajicek, the Flyers found themselves up four before the start of the third. Ilya Kovalchuk then posted the only goal for NJ 10:20 into the final block before Simon Gagne answered back to put the game out of reach.
“I think it was the leaders getting together, stepping up and saying that I think everyone was focusing on the big picture,” said Flyers captain Mike Richards. “Prongs, Kimmo and Gagne, we all thought that and wanted to settle everything down. You kind of get lost in the mix sometimes, and you need to focus on game by game.”
The 38-32-6 Flyers were able to snap a five game skid with the recent victory, winning their last seven of nine at home with six games remaining in the regular season. They are next scheduled to face the New York Islanders Thursday, April 1st. The Devils are set to welcome the Boston Bruins at the Prudential Center tonight at 7:00 PM.
The Philadelphia 76ers collectively netted 43 second quarter points to coast by the Minnesota Timberwolves 119-97 yesterday at the Wachovia Center. Andre Iguodala led the scoring campaign with 24 points. Lou Williams and Thaddeus Young came off the bench for 16 and 15, respectively.
Philadelphia has certainly proved themselves as true competitors with victories over New Jersey, Chicago, New Orleans, Houston and now Minnesota in their last five games. Each win has been produced without veteran leader Allen Iverson, who is currently out tending to his ill daughter.
“I liked the way we played for 48 minutes,” said Sixers coach Eddie Jordan. “We didn’t have any lulls like we have seen in the past. We stayed at a high level.” Philly will look to continue their streak tonight against Chris Bosh and the Toronto Raptors as the Timberwolves welcome the Charlotte Bobcats to the Target Center.
All-Star centerfielder Shane Victorino has signed a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies that will keep him with the team through the 2012 season. A major part of the Phillies World Series Championship in 2008 and appearance in 2009, the All-Star centerfielder signed a three year $22 million contract. Victorino racked up two Golden Glove awards in a row for the Phils; while carrying a .292 batting average, .355 obp, hitting at least ten home runs, and providing consistent steals.
Originally asking for $5.8 million at arbitration, Victorino’s deal will get him an average of $7.3 million per year – similar to a deal the Phillies offered to pitcher Joe Blanton.2010 Philadelphia Phillies tickets are available now, including many discount games starting at or under face value!
The Dallas Cowboys finally claimed victory in the playoffs for the first time since December of 1996 Saturday night over the Philadelphia Eagles 34-14 in Arlington, TX. Following a scoreless first quarter the Cowboys really found their rhythm, posting 27 points in the second while holding Philly to just one score.
“It’s just … rewarding,” said QB Tony Romo. “It makes me proud of the guys in there – fighting, grinding, staying committed to the approach. I’m happy for the guys, happy for Wade, happy for Jerry.”
Felix Jones produced a 73 yard run in the third quarter for six, marking the Cowboys final TD of the contest. The Eagles scored again in the fourth but the game was already well out of reach at that point. Dallas is set to play Minnesota in the NFC Divisional Round next Sunday at 1:00 PM. Vikings vs. Cowboys tickets are available now!
The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys will square off this Saturday for the second time in seven days at Cowboy Stadium. Last week Dallas dominated the Eagles 24-0 and earned the rights to call themselves NFC East Division champs in the process. Eagles head coach Andy Reid is certainly looking forward to Saturday’s contest following his team’s lack of production during Week 17.
“They played better than we played,” said Reid. “They coached better than we coached. You get back to business and you do it in a very matter-of-fact way. If you get caught up in all the what ifs and this and that, then you’re making a mistake. We don’t have time for that. It’s a hurried-up week and you have to get right back on the horse and figure out how to not get bucked off again.”
This year the Cowboys have the advantage on the offensive end, as they usually rack up 400 yards per game to Philadelphia’s 358. The Eagles are slightly better defensively, giving up just six fewer yards on average. Cowboys vs. Eagles tickets are now available!
Allen Iverson received quite the ovation last night at the Wachovia Center. In his first game back with the 76ers he produced 11 points and six assists, despite his new-look Philadelphia squad falling to the Denver Nuggets 93-83. “I just felt like I was back home,” said Iverson. “It was deja vu. Just a real good feeling. The fans made it hard on me because they made me more nervous than I already was.”
Iverson landed the starting role right away and stayed on the floor for a total of 38 minutes. Coach Eddie Jordan learned a vital lesson from the Memphis Grizzlies organization, saying “the first time I’m coaching Allen Iverson, I am not taking him out until he tells me.” The 76ers were up two at the end of the third quarter, where Denver eventually went on to outscore them 30-18 in the fourth to clinch the W.
Philadelphia has now lost ten in a row looking ahead to their next game against Iverson’s other former Detroit Pistons. Even though their recent streak isn’t exactly what they’ve been hoping for, the Answer is positive his team will soon look to a bright future. “I haven’t been here long enough to put a finger on one or two things wrong,” said Iverson. “Tonight, with the way the guys competed, I don’t know how they lost nine games in a row. I couldn’t see it, not from the team I was playing with tonight. We’ll get it together, believe me.”
Philadelphia 76ers tickets are now available!
Rasheed Wallace was more than comfortable in his hometown last night during Boston’s 105-74 romping over the Philadelphia 76ers. The premier 6th man netted six threes while gathering six rebounds and two steals. Whenever traveling to the place of his upbringing, Sheed will always make it a point to perform at his best.
“It’s home. A lot of friends and family don’t get the opportunity to see me play,” said Wallace. “Everybody can’t get that league pass and all that stuff. It’s always fun to come back here and play.”
Paul Pierce led the 5-0 Celtics in scoring with 21 points. Eddie House and Rajon Rondo added insurance to the blowout with 12 and 11. Philadelphia hit just 1 of 15 from beyond the arc. Andrew Iguodala and Thaddeus Young were the only Sixers to reach double digit numbers.
The Celtics are scheduled to square off against the Timberwolves tonight in Minnesota. Boston Celtics tickets are available now!
The New York Yankees rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth, but finally after a Derek Jeter double-play grounder and Mark Teixeira strikeout Philadelphia fans were able to take a deep breath and realize that there will in fact be a Game 6. Chase Utley was the leading contributor for the Phillies victory with two home runs and four RBI’s. Cliff Lee from the mound let up five runs in seven innings, but none the less completed the job.
“We definitely have the momentum,” said Phillies reliever Ryan Madson of the tough final inning. “I didn’t care if they scored one or two, as long as they didn’t score three.”
The Yankees will now meet the Phillies in New York this Wednesday at 7:57 PM. Get ready for a classic Pedro Martinez Andy Pettitte showdown. Pedro will be ready on five days rest while Pettitte will battle on three. Yankees manager Joe Girardi is still uncertain about whether he should give Pettitte the ball. “Physically I’ve got to see how he is,” said Girardi. “He threw a side Monday and felt good. But I’ll check with him Tuesday.”
