Kris Versteed scored twice on power play opportunities as his Chicago Blackhawks netted five goals in the second period alone, eventually posting a 7-1 victory in the books over the Calgary Flames. Five other Blackhawks were able to boost their stats with Versteed as the only player to notch multiple goals. Cristobal Huet denied 27 of 28 Calgary shot attempts on their own home ice. “Great game across the board, I’m very happy with all aspects and areas of our game,” said Chicago coach Joel Quenneville. “Everyone contributed.”

The Flames will try to build themselves back up for their Saturday contest against the Los Angeles Kings. Captain Jarome Iginla, knowing the potential of his team was surely frustrated after yesterday’s pathetic showing. “There wasn’t a guy in here, every single one of us, that was nearly good enough especially in an important time of the game in the second period where we just had a meltdown,” he said. “We’ve been doing that against this team for a while and we haven’t been good enough lately. That was embarrassing.”

The 13-5-2 Blackhawks will next travel to Edmonton to square off against the Oilers. The best deals for Chicago Blackhawks tickets can be found right here at AceTicket.com!

It took overtime to conclude last night’s contest between the Boston Bruins and Atlanta Thrashers at Phillips Arena, ending with a Patrice Bergeron goal for the only score of the shootout to give his Bruins the 4-3 win. Marco Sturm found the net to start six minutes into the first period, followed by a Michael Ryder goal to give Boston the early advantage heading into the second.

The Thrashers answered back to tie it up before Ryder came through again for the B’s on a power play. Maxim Afinogenov scrambled for Atlanta’s desperation goal with 40 seconds left in regulation, setting the stage for Bergeron to finish the battle in dramatic fashion.

Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask came up with 35 saves and completely shut down the Thrashers in OT when it counted. “We have lost several games in shootouts,” said Rask. “We wanted to make sure that didn’t happen again.” Bruins will now make their way to Buffalo to matchup with the Sabres tonight at 7:30 PM. Regular season Boston Bruins tickets are available now!

Alex Auld came up big with 31 saves for the Dallas Stars as they went on to battle their way past the Detroit Red Wings 3-1. Mike Ribeiro notched the first goal for Dallas on a power play 9:26 into the first period. Matt Kinskanen added to the lead early in the second before Henrik Zetterberg found the net for Detroit. From there the Stars defense was able to contain the high-power Red Wings offense, while Loui Eriksson tacked on the insurance with eight minutes to play.

The game was even closer than the box score shows after a controversial Brad May shot attempt 6:24 into the third period. May put the puck just inches past the goal line, but officials waved it off because a whistle had blown seconds earlier.

Detroit head coach Mike Babcock certainly wasn’t pleased with the way the situation was handled. “It wasn’t blown dead. It was a goal,” he said. “The guy never meant to blow the whistle. It was a shot.” Detroit can only look ahead to their next game against the Florida Panthers this Friday. The Stars will next welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to Dallas tomorrow at 8:30 PM.

Alex Ovechkin returned to the line up yesterday and produced right away for his Washington Capitals with a goal in the first period as they went on to defeat the New York Rangers 4-2 at Madison Square Garden. The premier LW missed six games due to injury but has still been able to find the net 15 times in just 15 games played. “It’s always nice when you get hurt and you come back and you score in the first period on your first shot,” said Ovechkin. “You feel pretty good about yourself. After that I feel pretty cool. I was not afraid to take some hits and go battle.”

Marian Gaborik scored the first goal for the Rangers before Ovechkin answered later in the period. Gaborik was able to score again 8:23 into the third period to tie it at 2-2. Matt Bradley scored the go-ahead goal for the Caps with five minutes left. Brian Pothier then fired one in the empty net unassisted to wrap things up in New York.

The Rangers have to wait until Saturday to redeem themselves at home against the Florida Panthers. Washington is scheduled to host the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, November 20th.

Matt Moulson set the tone early for his squad, scoring the initial goal six minutes into the first period as the New York Islanders went on to defeat the Boston Bruins 4-1 last night at the TD Garden. Daniel Paille found the net for the B’s in the second before Moulson decided to tack another on the board.  From there the Islanders shut down the Boston attack for the rest of the game. Trent Hunter added the fourth goal with less than a minute to go when the Bruins pulled their goalie for the extra skater.

The Bruins have now let up ten goals in their last two contests. “Those little details that meant so much to us being successful aren’t consistent right now,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien. “There’s not that confidence or determination we need to be successful. Right now we have to have our best players playing their best if we’re going to turn it around.”

Hopefully Boston can turn things around against the Atlanta Thrashers Thursday night. After heading to Atlanta they’ll travel north to square off against the Buffalo Sabres. Boston Bruins tickets are now available!

Panthers Edge Bruins In Shootout

It took a shootout for Florida Panthers Cory Stillman to score the only goal yesterday at the TD Garden, leaving the Boston Bruins with nothing to show for their 40 shot attempts on goalie Tomas Vokoun. Tim Thomas also had quite the performance in last night’s defensive showcase, holding the Panthers scoreless in regulation with 23 saves.

Despite their hard fought efforts, Thomas and the Bruins couldn’t help but share a bitter feeling after the disappointing loss. “We deserved the two points,” said Thomas. “They got some chances, but we got more. It is a little easier to take knowing that we won the last two.”

Forward Milan Lucic returned to practice on Thursday morning since breaking his right index finger mid-October. The B’s are scheduled for a tough matchup on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Following their stay in PA they’ll head back to Boston and host the New York Islanders on Monday, November 16th.

Bruins Shut Down Crosby, Penguins

After struggling on the offensive end last week, the Boston Bruins finally seem to have it all figured out. Saturday marked a successful win over the Buffalo Sabres, followed by the B’s dominating Sidney Crosby and the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers 3-0 yesterday at the TD Garden.

Crosby is in a bit of a slump himself, recording just two shots on the night. He’s now been left out of the stat book for the fifth consecutive contest.  Longtime veteran and former Penguin Mark Recchi knows the young phenom will be back in regular form soon enough. “It’s just one of those things where he’s in a rut right now,” said Recchi. “It won’t be very long he’ll be in it, I know that. He’s a great player and when they break out, they can go the opposite way, and everything they touch turns to goals.”

Matt Hunwick scored first for Boston 1:36 into the second period.  Daniel Paille and Patrice Bergeron supplied the bonus goals in the third. Tim Thomas denied all 27 Penguins shots on goal. The Bruins are next set to host the Florida Panthers this Thursday, November 12th at 7:00 PM.

Blackhawks Dominate Kings

The Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings were tied at 1-1 heading into the third period last night at the United Center. The Hawks then came out strong for the next ten minutes, tacking on three more goals to solidify the win and coast from there.  Chicago handled LA offensively with 10 shots on goal to their two in the final period.

John Madden started off the festivities, knocking in the initial goal just over a minute into the second period.  Anze Kopitar answered for the Kings soon after to tie it up, which was then followed up by Troy Brouwer, Jonathan Toews, and Andrew Ebbett’s game changing scores in the third.

The biggest factor in last night’s contest was how teams responded to power play opportunities.  The Kings were given the one-man advantage twice but failed to score each time.  The Blackhawks from their three chances earned two goals. “I’ve always said the power play can win you a game and penalty killing can lose you a game. And tonight, it lost us a game,” said Kings coach Terry Murray. “The Blackhawks brought their work boots. They got a couple-goal lead and played prevent defense.”

Chicago is now set to host the Colorado Avalanche Wednesday at 8:30 PM. Blackhawks tickets are available now!

Bruins Top Sabres 4-2

The goal hungry Boston Bruins finally found their offense with four goals against the Buffalo Sabres Saturday at the TD Garden. Marco Sturm was ecstatic and certainly showed it in the second period after scoring for the first time in over a month.  “A lot of guys were do,” said Sturm. “A lot of relief. As a forward you never want to go through that. Hopefully I can relax a little now.”

The B’s stacked the scoreboard in the first two periods and relied on defense from there. Jason Pominville knocked one more in for Buffalo late in the third but soon after the final horn sounded. The Sabres hold a 9-4 record so far this year but have recently struggled like the Bruins. “The greater issue is our game has lacked energy the last three games,” said Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff. “I think the old me might have gone irate and done something a little bit stranger. We’ve dealt with some sickness. We’re going to back off. We’re going to get the guys some rest.”

The Bruins are now scheduled to host the Pittsburgh Penguins in Boston tomorrow at 7:00 PM. Find great deals for Boston Bruins tickets right here at AceTicket.com!
