Where did this New York Rangers power play come from? The Rangers were sharp with the man advantage last night against Tampa netting three power play goals, two by Chris Drury, en route to a 5-2 win. Despite their very strong start the Rangers have struggled on the power play, ranking second to last in the NHL. Drury credits Rangers assistant coach with the improvements on the power play; “I have to give a lot of credit to Perry Pearn. He made some adjustments”, said Drury according to ESPN.com.
Ryan Callahan had the first power play goal of the night for the Rangers, while Chris Drury added a shorthanded goal into the mix, getting him his second career hat trick. Henrik Lundqvist had 36 saves on the night for another solid performance in net. The Rangers’ 23 points is good for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Rangers tickets are available for all games including their next home game at Madison Square Garden on 11/10 vs the Oilers.
The New York Yankees have made their first decisions of the Fall GM meetings. Brian Cashman announced that New York will buy out the final years of Jason Giambi’s and Carl Pavano’s contracts. “Given the circumstances and the money involved, I don’t think they were surprises to anybody,” Cashman told the AP on Tuesday. While there is an outside possibility that both could re-sign with the team, Giambi may be heading back to Oakland, and Pavano’s solid starts late in the season drew interest from many teams.
Andy Pettite is likely to remain a Yankee, although he would likely take a significant pay cut from his $16 million 2008 salary.
After Sunday’s convincing win over the Dallas Cowboys the New York Giants stand alone in first place in the NFC East. The 35-14 victory put the Giants at 7-1 on the year. The Redskins’ loss on Monday night put Washington 2 games behind in the loss column. The Giants are by no means in the clear for winning the division however. They have four NFC East matchups remaining in the 2nd half of the year. They will play the Eagles twice and the Redskins and Cowboys once more. While many expected the Giants to get back to the playoffs this year, few expected them to stand at 7-1 at the midway point.
The Giants have won with both offense and defense. They have the most points for in the NFC East with 226 while giving up the fewest points against with 129.
The Giants will be at Philadelphia on 11/9 to play the Eagles.
New York Giants tickets are available for all remaining games.

Almost halfway through their 2008 season the defending Super Bowl Champion, New York Giants are looking like a team intent on getting back to the big game. The Giants completed a comeback against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday to improve to 6-1. That record is good for first place in the NFC East. Good news for the Giants who will face two East rivals in the next two weeks in the Cowboys and the Eagles.
Down 14-9 in the fourth quarter the Giants relied on a little luck and Manning’s arm to complete a 12 point comeback. With a backup snapper in the game the Steelers snapped the ball into the endzone on a punt attempt resulting in a safety and possession for the Giants. Eli Manning led the Giants down the field completing the drive with a TD pass to Kevin Boss. The Giants held their 21-14 lead for the eventual win.
The Giants will host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday 11/2. Giants tickets still available for this and all 2008 games at Giants Stadium.
What will the Yankees do in October? Since 1995 the answer was simple, play baseball. However 2008 marks the first time since 1995 that the New York Yankees will not be in the playoffs. For Derek Jeter its the first time in his MLB career that he is not playing baseball in October. With the playoff streak broken you can bet the bank that the Yankees will try to reload this off-season.
The first step in preparing for next year is now done. The Yankees signed General Manager Brian Cashman to an extension through 2011. According to ESPN.com Cashman said, “I’ve got a job to finish here”. The Yankees are still a very talented team and will likely benefit from some pitching upgrades. Many speculate that the Yankees will make a play for C.C. Sabathia, the best free agent pitcher on the market for 2009. Other Pitching options could include Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett.
The New York Yankees will also benefit greatly if they can stay healthy. Injuries to Wang, Posada and Chamberlain definitely contributed to New York’s woes this season. They should expect a better year at the new Yankee Stadium in 2009. Only time will tell though.
2009 New York Yankees tickets will be available in December of 2008.
