Alex Ovechkin returned to the line up yesterday and produced right away for his Washington Capitals with a goal in the first period as they went on to defeat the New York Rangers 4-2 at Madison Square Garden. The premier LW missed six games due to injury but has still been able to find the net 15 times in just 15 games played. “It’s always nice when you get hurt and you come back and you score in the first period on your first shot,” said Ovechkin. “You feel pretty good about yourself. After that I feel pretty cool. I was not afraid to take some hits and go battle.”

Marian Gaborik scored the first goal for the Rangers before Ovechkin answered later in the period. Gaborik was able to score again 8:23 into the third period to tie it at 2-2. Matt Bradley scored the go-ahead goal for the Caps with five minutes left. Brian Pothier then fired one in the empty net unassisted to wrap things up in New York.

The Rangers have to wait until Saturday to redeem themselves at home against the Florida Panthers. Washington is scheduled to host the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, November 20th.

Hideki Matsui really lived up to the name Godzilla with three hits and six RBI’s last night at Yankee Stadium, as the New York Yankees went on to win Game 6 and the World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies for their 27th championship. Matsui will be joining the list of free agents this offseason, and certainly has proved to the organization that he is worth every penny they are giving him. “It’s awesome,” Matsui said through a translator. “Unbelievable. I’m surprised myself.”

Veteran Andy Pettitte notched the win from five innings pitched, letting up three runs and four hits.  Mariano Rivera seemed collected as usual while putting the series to a close. The trusted right-hander allowed just one hit through the final five outs.

The Yankees were in control all game after Matsui’s two-run homer in the second. They were up 7-1 in the 6th when Ryan Howard knocked a longball to left, bringing in Chase Utley to pull within four. “You don’t look at it as a failure,” said Howard. “We had a great season. We just got beat by the better team.”

Alex Rodriguez, after a dramatic year full of injury and steroid allegations was thrilled at the thought of finally collecting a ring next April. “My teammates, coaches and the organization stood by me and now we stand here as world champions,” said Rodriguez. “We’re going to enjoy it, and we’re going to party!” Already looking forward to 2010? Alex Rodriguez knocked in Johnny Damon for the go-ahead run after a heads up double steal in the top of the 9th inning, as the New York Yankees rallied to win 7-4 over the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday at Citizens Bank Park. Now holding a 3-1 advantage in the 2009 World Series, the Yankees are just one win away from claiming their 27th championship.

“There’s no question - I’ve never had a bigger hit,” said Rodriguez.”The one time I got hit in yesterday’s game, my first at-bat, kind of woke me up a little bit and just reminded me, ‘Hey, this is the World Series, let’s get it going a little bit.’” It couldn’t be a better time for A-Rod to find his rhythm heading into tonight’s game against the left-handed Cliff Lee, who dominated the Yanks with 10 K’s during Philadelphia’s 6-1 Game 1 victory in New York.

AJ Burnett will get the call to start on the mound for the Yankees. Burnett is 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA so far this postseason. Game time is set for 7:57 PM. If necessary Game 6 and 7 will take place in New York Wednesday and Thursday night.

With the Yankees down 0-1 in the World Series heading into their last game in the Bronx before moving to Philadelphia for the next three contests, A.J. Burnett saw Pedro Martinez on the other side and realized the tough battle ahead. “I knew it was going to be crazy,” said Burnett. “I knew he was going to be on his game. I focus on myself, but you can’t help but watch his game. It’s the funnest I’ve had on the field.” Burnett certainly brought his A game while enjoying himself on the mound at Yankee Stadium, giving up just one run in seven innings with nine strike outs as the New York Yankees went on to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1.

Martinez performed well for Philadelphia, striking out eight and surrendering three runs in his six-plus innings pitched. Two of the three runs came from Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui solo-home runs. The Yankees bats were silent until Teixeira’s awaited bomb to center field in the fourth. “I think the home run got the crowd back in it,” Teixeira said. “It kind of put a little bit of a crack in their armor.” Cole Hamels (PA) and Andy Pettitte (NY) are the next scheduled pitching duel for game three this Saturday.  The series now moves to Citizens Bank Park and if necessary will move back to New York for Games 6 and 7.

Cliff Lee shut down the New York Yankees power line up, collecting 10 K’s while giving up just one unearned run as the Philadelphia Phillies handled CC Sabathia and the Yankees bullpen 6-1 to open the 2009 World Series. Third basemen Alex Rodriguez after going on a tear all post-season struck out three times in his World Series debut. “I did keep it simple today. He kept it even more simple,” said Rodriguez of Lee. “He threw the ball well. When a guy comes out like that, you tip your cap and move on. He made some pretty good pitches.”

Sabathia made his best effort for a pitching duel, giving up two runs courtesy of Chase Utley’s two homers in his seven innings of work. After CC’s exit the Yanks bullpen just couldn’t hold it together.  Phil Hughes and Brian Bruney gave an extra four runs to the Phillies in the eighth and ninth innings to “close out” Game 1.

Game 2 is scheduled for Yankee stadium tonight at 7:57 PM and will feature starting pitchers Pedro Martinez and A.J. Burnett. Martinez in last week’s NLCS series against the Los Angeles Dodgers threw for seven scoreless innings. Burnett during the 2009 regular season held a 13-9 record with a 4.04 ERA.

2009 World Series Preview

The 2009 MLB World Series will officially begin tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium (7:57 PM).  The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies are no strangers to postseason competition. The Phillies will be contending their World Series title as the Yanks attempt to redeem themselves after a poor 2008 regular season showing. Despite their previous drought last year, New York has proven most successful over the years with 26 total championships and 40 World Series appearances (not to mention their 103-59 2009 regular season record).

The first two games in the Bronx are expected to be nothing short of thrilling. The opening matchup will feature club aces and former teammates Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia. CC won the AL Cy Young in 2007 but Lee claimed the award last season.

Phillies veteran Pedro Martinez will get the nod to take the hill for game 2 (Yankees pitcher TBD). The Former Boston Red Sox right-hander and the Yankees have certainly developed quite a relationship over the years. New York fans should be riled up for this one especially.

“I think he’s still got quite a bit left,” said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel of Pedro. “I was watching those playoff games that he pitched in. His velocity was sitting 87 to 91 mph, and he was even better than that at Dodger Stadium. That was a couple years ago when he pitched those games against the Yankees. He knows how to pitch.” Martinez is 11-11 with a 3.20 ERA in 32 career starts against the Yankees.

The Rangers got great production out of their new free agent star, Marian Gaborik in last night’s 5-2 win over the Coyotes.  Gaborik scored two goals and added an assist but left the game with an undisclosed injury prompting fears that the injury prone forward will miss time again this year. The Rangers jumped out early in this one, grabbing a two goal lead by the end of the first period. New York got goals from Anisimov and Gaborik in the first.  The Rangers didn’t let up in the second with goals from Prospal and Gaborik once again. Both Gaborik’s goals came on power plays.

The win snapped a three game losing streak by the Rangers who improved to 8-3-1 on the year.  New York will play two on the road against the Islanders and Wild before returning to Madison Square Garden on 11/1 to host the Boston Bruins.  You can get New York Rangers tickets for this and all games at MSG.

Yankees veteran closer Mariano Rivera shut the door on the Los Angeles Angels, letting in just one run off two hits in New York’s final six crucial outs to take the American League Championship Series last night in the Bronx.  The Yanks were last seen in the World Series in 2003, when they lost to the Florida Marlins in six games.

“This is what we play for — this is what we set out for in Spring Training,” said starting pitcher Andy Pettitte. “Obviously, to be able to get there and to accomplish that, it’s awesome. I just feel very fortunate and very blessed to be on this team.” Pettitte notched the game win for New York with one run given up in his six innings of work.

Although Los Angeles came up short from advancing themselves, they certainly had a great run this season with 97 regular season wins.  They were also able to find a way past the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS series before making New York dig really dig in for the AL Championship.

“We had to overcome a lot of obstacles this season, and we have nothing to hang our heads about,” said Torii Hunter. “We had a great season, and I wish the Yankees luck in the World Series. They’ve got some of my favorite players over there, and I’ll be rooting for them. Why not? I’m an American League guy.”
