Rajon Rondo took charge as floor general and scored 14 of his 18 points in the third quarter as the Boston Celtics beat out the Minnesota Timberwolves 92-90 yesterday at the Target Center. Rondo and the rest of the starting five all produced double digit numbers for the C’s.

Minnesota looked as though they were the dominant team of the night through the first half. Eventually Boston’s veteran leadership overcame the inexperienced and young Timberwolves roster.

“We played hard, we played with a lot of energy,” said Wolves forward Oleksiy Pecherov. “We just have to learn how to finish these games. We’ve been playing the last three games with great effort. To lose at the end of the game is kind of hard. It’s what we need to learn about.” Pecherov and former Celtics big man Al Jefferson led Minnesota in scoring with 24 and 18.

Kevin Garnett posted a nice stat line against his old squad with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. “I’m so numb when I come in here,” said Garnett. “I sort of put my face on as I say. I get so intense…It’s easy to come in here and focus because I don’t have any of my old teammates here anymore.”

After battling through their first true road test the C’s will welcome the Phoenix Suns to the TD Garden this Friday at 7:30 PM. Boston Celtics tickets are available now!

After three quarters of basketball yesterday at the American Airlines Center, Dirk Nowitzki was just 5-for-14 from the field with his team down by 15.  The Dallas Mavericks then rallied for 44 fourth quarter points to defeat the Utah Jazz 96-85. Nowitzki set a franchise record with 29 points himself in the final frame.

“It was an ugly game,” said Nowitzki. “We couldn’t get anything going for three quarters. We were slow. We were looking for a spark offensively and I was able to do that tonight.” Dirk finished with a total stat line of 40 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and five blocks.

Utah’s defensive specialist Carlos Boozer was tied up on the bench with five fouls when Nowitzki went to work on the rest of the squad. Jason Kidd supplied 19 points for the Mavs, including the dagger from downtown to seal the game in the final minutes.  Dallas will next host the Toronto Raptors and Houston Rockets on November 7th and 10th. The Jazz have a pair of home games themselves on the 5th and 7th against the San Antonio Spurs and Sacramento Kings.

Rasheed Wallace was more than comfortable in his hometown last night during Boston’s 105-74 romping over the Philadelphia 76ers. The premier 6th man netted six threes while gathering six rebounds and two steals. Whenever traveling to the place of his upbringing, Sheed will always make it a point to perform at his best.

“It’s home. A lot of friends and family don’t get the opportunity to see me play,” said Wallace. “Everybody can’t get that league pass and all that stuff. It’s always fun to come back here and play.”

Paul Pierce led the 5-0 Celtics in scoring with 21 points. Eddie House and Rajon Rondo added insurance to the blowout with 12 and 11. Philadelphia hit just 1 of 15 from beyond the arc. Andrew Iguodala and Thaddeus Young were the only Sixers to reach double digit numbers.

The Celtics are scheduled to square off against the Timberwolves tonight in Minnesota. Boston Celtics tickets are available now!

Rajon Rondo racked up 10 assists for the fourth straight game and more importantly extended his contract as the Boston Celtics defeated the New Orleans Hornets 97-87 Sunday at the TD Garden. His new contract promises at least $55 million over the next five years.

All-Star PG Chris Paul on the other side of the court last night led the Hornets with 22 points and eight assists. Despite his efforts, New Orleans simply couldn’t hang with the Celtics through all four quarters. “They are on top; we are on the bottom. We want to get where they are,” said Paul. “I am a huge advocate for the Boston Celtics. They’ve established themselves as a team that won’t beat themselves.”

Paul Pierce led the C’s in scoring with 27 points. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen came up with 17 and 14 each. Boston will now travel to Philadelphia to square off against the 76ers on Tuesday before facing the Timberwolves in Minnesota the following night.  Their next home game will be on Friday, November 6th when the Phoenix Suns come to town.

Raptors Stun Cavaliers By 10

LeBron James earned his first triple double of the season with 23 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds, but his effort just simply wasn’t enough for the Cleveland Cavaliers to get by the Toronto Raports Wednesday at the Air Canada Centre. The Cavaliers 0-2 start instead of answering the call to high expectations have only raised questions and doubts in Cleveland. The 2008 MVP is confident his team will work out the initial kinks to get themselves back on track as one of the top teams in the East.

“Earlier I’d get very upset when you lose two or three games, you’d just feel like you can’t turn it around,” said James. “But I’m at a point in my career now where I know that you can lose two but, at the same time, you don’t look too far into it. You learn from the mistakes and you just try to get better.”

Raptors Andrea Bargnani led all scoring with 28 points.  “If Andrea gets it going and is scoring the basketball a lot, then we are going to be tough to beat” said Chris Bosh, who also played a big factor in Toronto’s victory with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

The Cavs are set to travel to Minnesota to square off against the Timberwolves Friday at 8:00 PM. The Wolves are coming off a buzzer-beater win over the New Jersey Nets and will be ready to challenge Cleveland on their own stomping grounds.

Paul Pierce dropped 15 points before sitting out the entire fourth quarter as the Celtics went on to dominate the Charlotte Bobcats 92-59 last night in Boston. Now 2-0 and well rested after winning over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, the C’s have proved to be at the top of their game heading into early November.  “It’s great we could rest our bodies,” said Pierce.”The more rest, the better. That means we’re playing well, especially the starters.”

Ray Allen netted a game-high 18 points from his 38 minutes played.  Rajon Rondo racked up another double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.  Gerald Wallace led Charlotte with just 10 during in their dismal 59 point effort. “I don’t know if they call that coaching,” said hall of fame head coach Larry Brown. “Our team wasn’t prepared. Weren’t ready to play. That’s nobody’s fault but the coach.”

The Celtics are now 2-0 heading into their next contest against the Chicago Bulls this Friday at the TD Garden.  Boston Celtics tickets are now available!

Lakers Collect Rings, Defeat Clippers

Kobe Bryant after receiving his fourth NBA Championship ring went back to work with 33 points as the Los Angeles Lakers went on to defeat their in-town rival LA Clippers 99-92 at the Staples Center. Every Laker on the team earned a ring from their 2008-2009 title except for Ron Artest, who joined the squad after trading places with now Houston Rockets small forward Trevor Ariza earlier this year.

Andrew Bynum on his 22nd birthday contributed with 26 points and 13 rebounds. While the Lakers were somewhat distracted by the banners, crowd and general memories of the summers events, the Clippers actually hung around. Eric Gordon, Marcus Camby and Chris Kaman netted 21, 18, and 14 in their efforts to stay with the defending champs.  All it took was a Kobe/Odom take over early in the fourth for the Lakers to pull away.

“It’s always tough to play games after those kind of ceremonies,” said Lakers coach Phil Jackson (Has won ten NBA titles as head coach with Chicago/LA). “Some of the energy is always difficult to maintain because there is a lot of energy that’s kind of dissipated when you go out and have that kind of ceremony. You’re not ready to step up and march to the tune of this season right yet.”

The Lakers will next welcome the Dallas Mavericks to LA this Friday at 10:30 PM ET. Los Angeles Lakers tickets are available now!

The Cavaliers after finishing the 2008 regular season 39–2 in Cleveland started their 2009 campaign with a loss on their own stage. The Boston Celtics came into the Quicken Loans Arena last night and handled the Cavs 95-89 to officially open the 2009-2010 NBA regular season. The Celtics were down early but rallied back and proceeded to carry a double digit lead through most of the second and third quarters.

Paul Pierce led Boston with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett followed with 16 and 13, respectively.  “It was a good Day One,” said Pierce. “Psychologically, you want to go into a team’s building and win, especially in a place where we haven’t won in a few years. It’s great to come here and get a win. We know when we come here next time that we can do it again.” The victory marked the first Celtics victory in Cleveland since 2004.

Cavaliers franchise player LeBron James netted 38 points while racking up eight assists, four blocks, and four rebounds. Shaquille O’Neal certainly proved to be in shape and ready in a Cavs uniform with 10 points and 10 boards. The difference maker in yesterday’s contest was points off the bench.  Celtics reserves scored a combined 26 points to Cleveland’s 10. “I liked what happened tonight because everyone contributed,” said Celtics head coach Doc Rivers. “It was as much of a team win as you can get.”

The Celtics are ready for a string of home games after a great start on the road.  The TD Garden will welcome the Charlotte Bobcats tonight before the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Hornets make their way to town October 30th and November 1st.

Celtics Open Tonight In Cleveland

The Boston Celtics will finally begin their 2009-2010 campaign tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Quicken Loans Arena. Both Celtics and Cavs title quests were stopped by the Orlando Magic, despite finishing the regular season with the two best records in the East.

Unsatisfactory playoff basketball resulted in both power house organizations to shake things up this offseason.  The trend that bigger is better seemed to be in full effect after witnessing deals for Rasheed Wallace and Shaquille O’Neal.

Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has been extremely excited to welcome Sheed to Boston. “He’ll spread the floor offensively, something we’ve never had,” said Rivers. “Heck, most people don’t have a center sitting behind the 3-point line. Defensively, he’s been terrific. He’s also going to give us some post play on the offensive end.”

Along with Wallace, Marquis Daniels and Shelden Williams were added to the roster to give the C’s the necessary depth they were in need of last year in the playoffs. Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis was re-signed but will be missing a good portion of the season due to a broken right thumb.

Shaquille O’Neal is producing already for the Cavs this preseason with a handful of double digit nights.  The three-time MVP made clear that he is ready to “help the ‘King’ win an NBA championship.”

The Cavaliers have won 11 consecutive games at home over Boston.  The Celtics last beat them in Cleveland in December of 2004.  Tonight’s contest could very well be the first regular season preview of the 2010 Eastern Finals. Game time is set for 7:30 PM.

Eddie House came off the bench and contributed with 20 points as the Boston Celtics went on to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-82 in Columbus, OH for their final preseason game.  Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett took the night off to insure their strength for the start of the regular season.

Paul Pierce decided himself to make a game appearance, netting 11 points in his 13 minutes played. “I was just trying to stay sharp,” Pierce said. “We’ve got five, six days before we play again. I thought it was good for me to go out there.” Having only one of the Big three out on the court definitely gave others the opportunity to step up. Pierce, House, Wallace, Perkins, Daniels, and Rondo all left the game with double digit numbers.

The Celtics and Cavs will open up their 2009-2010 regular season campaigns against each other Tuesday, October 27th. Boston will then host the Charlotte Bobcats at the TD Garden on the 28th.
