The Kansas City Royals are expected to host the 2012 MLB All-Star game at Kauffman Stadium. The official announcement will come as early as next month’s winter meetings according to MLB sources. The Boston Red Sox were campaigning to have the events at Fenway as part of the Parks 100th anniversary celebration.

Rob Neyer from ESPN.com weighed in with his opinions, saying “In 2012 it will have been only 13 years since the last time the Red Sox hosted the All-Star Game, while it will have been nearly 40 years for Kansas City…Red Sox fans might argue that Kansas City doesn’t “deserve” an All-Star Game, that the All-Star Game should by hosted by cities full of passionate fans. I’ve got some sympathy for that opinion.”

Kauffman Stadium played host to its only other All-Star Game in 1973 when it was still referred to as Royals Stadium. Even though the Sox didn’t get the bid for 2012, there are still plenty of events to look forward to at Fenway. Major League Baseball has just recently announced that Kansas City Royals phenom Zack Greinke is the winner of the 2009 American League Cy Young Award. Greinke won by a landside, ranking first on 25 of the 28 deciding ballots. He finished the season with 16 wins from his impressive 2.16 ERA. Other top candidates included Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander, CC Sabathia and Roy Halladay.

The young 25 year old has already experienced his ups and down in the big leagues. He led the AL in losses in 2005 and quit baseball the following year for about two months while diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. He is now the most feared pitcher baseball, despite his team’s lack of victories. “Greinke deserved it. Before the season was over, I said my vote was for him,” said Hernandez. “This has taught me that I need to be perfect, I will prepare myself to be stronger next season. The Boston Red Sox just recently announced standard ticket prices for 2010 regular season games at Fenway Park. Between 2008 and 2009, all ticket costs froze in price from standing room areas to field box sections. For the upcoming season 63% of the tickets sold at Fenway Park will cost under $52.

“We will continue our ninth year of private investment, generated in large part by ticket revenue, to preserve, protect and enhance Fenway Park,” said Red Sox President & CEO Larry Lucchino.  “These annual investments, including those underway for 2010, total well over $100 million and, have put us in a position to host Red Sox baseball at Fenway Park for the next 40 to 50 years.”

The lowest ticket prices will stay at $12. Seats that include grandstands, right field box, right field roof box and lower bleachers will raise no more than $2 in price. In 2009 a new Fenway Park attendance record was set with 3,062,699 fans entering the park in total during the regular season. 

The first chance people have to get back into America’s most Beloved ballpark will be on Saturday, December 12th during the “Christmas at Fenway” special.  Fenway Park will be hosting a number of events around the NHL Winter Classic game New Years Day. The Red Sox announced yesterday that Jason Varitek will be playing in Boston next year after deciding to extend his $3 million option. The organization made clear that the captain will serve as backup catcher to Victor Martinez. Varitek has been a member of the Red Sox for 13 seasons. Since starting for Boston he’s hit for an average of .259 with 175 home runs and 705 RBI’s.

“We’re happy to have Jason back and we look forward to a good year from him in 2010,” said Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein. “He means an awful lot to the organization on and off the field. He helps solidify our catching position also and is a big asset to the pitching staff.”

The front office has definitely kept busy so far this offseason. They picked up the team option for Martinez and also reached an agreement with longtime knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. The Boston Red Sox haven’t wasted any time preparing for 2010 this offseason. The organization recently traded away left-handed pitchers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez for Florida Marlins outfielder Jeremy Hermida. Picked 11th overall in the 2002 draft, Hermida has earned a career batting average of .265. In 516 total games played he’s knocked 57 homers and 210 RBI’s.

“We still think there’s a good hitter in there,” said Red Sox GM Theo Epstein. “Jeremy is a player who hasn’t fulfilled his potential yet. We were able to acquire him at a reasonable cost to see if he can fulfill that potential with us.”

For the Marlins in 2009 the 25 year old Hermida made just one error out of 205 total chances for a .995 fielding percentage. The 2009 MLB season has finally been put to rest, and for Red Sox fans this could only mean one thing….When does the 2010 regular season start up? The countdown for next season starts at 151 days, when the Red Sox host the new found world champion New York Yankees April 5th at Fenway Park.

There have been debates regarding weather and field status for opening day. Fenway is hosting numerous events around the annual Winter Classic on January 1st, leaving questions and doubts about the fields overall condition.  One option standing is for the series to be held at Yankee Stadium and move a set of mid-season games to Boston in return.

Hideki Matsui really lived up to the name Godzilla with three hits and six RBI’s last night at Yankee Stadium, as the New York Yankees went on to win Game 6 and the World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies for their 27th championship. Matsui will be joining the list of free agents this offseason, and certainly has proved to the organization that he is worth every penny they are giving him. “It’s awesome,” Matsui said through a translator. “Unbelievable. I’m surprised myself.”

Veteran Andy Pettitte notched the win from five innings pitched, letting up three runs and four hits.  Mariano Rivera seemed collected as usual while putting the series to a close. The trusted right-hander allowed just one hit through the final five outs.

The Yankees were in control all game after Matsui’s two-run homer in the second. They were up 7-1 in the 6th when Ryan Howard knocked a longball to left, bringing in Chase Utley to pull within four. “You don’t look at it as a failure,” said Howard. “We had a great season. We just got beat by the better team.”

Alex Rodriguez, after a dramatic year full of injury and steroid allegations was thrilled at the thought of finally collecting a ring next April. “My teammates, coaches and the organization stood by me and now we stand here as world champions,” said Rodriguez. “We’re going to enjoy it, and we’re going to party!” Already looking forward to 2010? The New York Yankees rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth, but finally after a Derek Jeter double-play grounder and Mark Teixeira strikeout Philadelphia fans were able to take a deep breath and realize that there will in fact be a Game 6. Chase Utley was the leading contributor for the Phillies victory with two home runs and four RBI’s. Cliff Lee from the mound let up five runs in seven innings, but none the less completed the job.

“We definitely have the momentum,” said Phillies reliever Ryan Madson of the tough final inning. “I didn’t care if they scored one or two, as long as they didn’t score three.”

The Yankees will now meet the Phillies in New York this Wednesday at 7:57 PM. Get ready for a classic Pedro Martinez Andy Pettitte showdown. Pedro will be ready on five days rest while Pettitte will battle on three. Yankees manager Joe Girardi is still uncertain about whether he should give Pettitte the ball. “Physically I’ve got to see how he is,” said Girardi. “He threw a side Monday and felt good. But I’ll check with him Tuesday.”

Alex Rodriguez knocked in Johnny Damon for the go-ahead run after a heads up double steal in the top of the 9th inning, as the New York Yankees rallied to win 7-4 over the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday at Citizens Bank Park. Now holding a 3-1 advantage in the 2009 World Series, the Yankees are just one win away from claiming their 27th championship.

“There’s no question - I’ve never had a bigger hit,” said Rodriguez.”The one time I got hit in yesterday’s game, my first at-bat, kind of woke me up a little bit and just reminded me, ‘Hey, this is the World Series, let’s get it going a little bit.’” It couldn’t be a better time for A-Rod to find his rhythm heading into tonight’s game against the left-handed Cliff Lee, who dominated the Yanks with 10 K’s during Philadelphia’s 6-1 Game 1 victory in New York.

AJ Burnett will get the call to start on the mound for the Yankees. Burnett is 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA so far this postseason. Game time is set for 7:57 PM. If necessary Game 6 and 7 will take place in New York Wednesday and Thursday night.

With the Yankees down 0-1 in the World Series heading into their last game in the Bronx before moving to Philadelphia for the next three contests, A.J. Burnett saw Pedro Martinez on the other side and realized the tough battle ahead. “I knew it was going to be crazy,” said Burnett. “I knew he was going to be on his game. I focus on myself, but you can’t help but watch his game. It’s the funnest I’ve had on the field.” Burnett certainly brought his A game while enjoying himself on the mound at Yankee Stadium, giving up just one run in seven innings with nine strike outs as the New York Yankees went on to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1.

Martinez performed well for Philadelphia, striking out eight and surrendering three runs in his six-plus innings pitched. Two of the three runs came from Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui solo-home runs. The Yankees bats were silent until Teixeira’s awaited bomb to center field in the fourth. “I think the home run got the crowd back in it,” Teixeira said. “It kind of put a little bit of a crack in their armor.” Cole Hamels (PA) and Andy Pettitte (NY) are the next scheduled pitching duel for game three this Saturday.  The series now moves to Citizens Bank Park and if necessary will move back to New York for Games 6 and 7.
