Comcast Center to Welcome Green Day

Posted by Ace Staff on August 5th, 2010

Last night Green Day kicked off the second American leg of their 2010 tour in front a crowd of 24,000 at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ- delivering a marathon three-hour set spanning their entire career and reminding fans that through Broadway fame and an entire Rock Band devoted to their music they’re still the same old punk trio that broke out of California in the early ‘90s. After a theatric, energy-driven opening to the show featuring tracks from the latest 21st Century Breakdown (2009) and rock opera American Idiot (2004), the second half was a stripped back time-warp into the band’s greatest hits and even dabbing into classic rock covers including Guns n’ Roses’  “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” and AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell”. Billie Joe Armstrong even invited a few young fans onto the stage to help sing “Longview” from the critically acclaimed Dookie (1994), one walking away with Armstrong’s guitar and the advice: “Now go sell it and get some singing lessons!” Green Day has consistently proved to be a modern day mirror of what rock and roll once was- having sold over 65 million records worldwide and 24.5 million in the US alone and winning four Grammy award celebrating their albums. While Green Day began as an independent punk band in the 90’s stapling their success with the breakthrough of Dookie Insomniac (1995) and Nimrod (1997), the band reignited their popularity with a younger generation with the release of their conceptual American Idiot. The band’s popularity crossed musical borders when this album was turned into a Tony-award winning Broadway musical, expanding on the Jesus of suburbia themes that are entwined throughout the tracks.  The band’s latest trek is a short one, an 18-date month-long tour including a co-headlining spot at this year’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. The tour hits New England on Monday, August 16th at the Comcast Center in Mansfield before travelling to South America for another stretch in October.
