Uniting under one name for a fall tour, three of the biggest names in jazz, rock and soul can be called the Dukes of September. Music icons Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs will perform more than 20 shows together this summer and fall as the Dukes of September Rhythm Revue. The Dukes launch on a six-week US tour on August 19 at Charles Ives Center in Danbury, CT, and continue on the road through October 2, when they’ll perform at The Joint in Las Vegas, NV. Along the way, the Dukes will also perform on August 31 at the Wang Theatre in Boston, MA.
The “Rhythm Revue” will feature selections from the catalogues of Steely Dan (of which Fagen and McDonald were members) and The Doobie Brothers (which McDonald joined in 1975), as well as tracks from the musicians’ solo careers and the songs that made them want to become musicians in the first place. The upcoming tour will not be the first show with the three musicians appearing on stage together. Fagen, McDonald and Scaggs joined nearly two decades ago for a nationally touring show (and live album) called The New York Rock and Soul Revue.
Similar to the upcoming outing, the previous concert featured a wide variety of songs and on-stage collaborators. The shows were such a blast that they decided to give it another go and tour together again this year. “We’ll be playing the kind of R&B tunes that made us want to be musicians way back when, as well as select numbers from our personal repertoires,” Fagen said. “We’ve enlisted a swell group of players and singers.” The assembly, very likely a onetime thing, only has 22 dates scheduled for the tour, so tickets are going to sell fast.
