Posted by Ace Staff on May 18th, 2010
On Thursday, May 20th, jazz guitarist Pat Metheny performs at the Orpheum Theatre. Metheny has been one of the most successful jazz musicians since the 1970s, accruing three gold albums and 17 Grammy Awards. In addition to his own Pat Metheny Group, he has worked with numerous jazz musicians such as Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, and Brad Mehldau. Orchestra tickets for the show at the Orpheum start at $95. In a very different type of entertainment on Thursday, Kowloon hosts the Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari Comedy Night. The $50 General Admission ticket includes a performance from some of the area’s funniest comedians, a live auction, a light Chinese Buffet and “the world’s first hot dog pu-pu platter.” On Sunday, The Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari is at Suffolk Downs in East Boston from 12 PM – 5 PM. Proceeds from the event benefit The Joey Fund and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. General admission tickets are available for $15.
Friday is an incredibly busy night in New England with just about every venue offering a stellar performance. The House of Blues will host Bo Burnham, a young comedian, singer-songwriter, musician, actor and Internet celebrity. Writing comedic and satirical songs with a politically incorrect slant, he gained popularity on YouTube before releasing his first EP on Comedy Central Records. In August of 2008, four days after his eighteenth birthday, he became the youngest person to record a Comedy Central special. Tickets start at $35. Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena also has a comedy night planned for Friday with Gabriel Iglesias taking the stage. Known for his impersonations and animated personality, Iglesias got his start on the Nickelodeon show All That. He has also been featured on Comedy Central specials, and films such as The Surfer King. Tickets start at $110.
The legendary Neil Young visits the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts on Friday. Young has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a solo artist and also as a member of Buffalo Springfield. His career has spanned 5 decades, and has included numerous accolades and awards. He consistently evolves and experiments with his sound, while staying true to his writing of simultaneously topical and classic songs. A few orchestra tickets remain for his performance in Worcester, starting at just $285. The summer concert season is getting underway at the Comcast Center, and on Friday night they’ll present Sugarland. The country duo broke out in 2004 and has had five #1 singles in the US. Jake Owen and Danny Gokey will join the band at this weekend in Mansfield, and tickets start at $59.
Also at the Comcast Center this weekend is the annual Kiss 108 Concert. The impressive 2010 lineup includes Adam Lambert, Ke$ha, Boys Like Girls, Orianthi, Kris Allen, Jason Derulo, New Boyz, Iyaz, and The Script. The show is all ages and benefits The Genesis Fund, a non-profit organization which aids children born with genetic diseases, birth defects, and mental retardation. Tickets start at $85, and pavilion seats are available starting at $175.
